(Ellerie's POV)
I peeked into Mom and Dad's bedroom to tell them that Ro had almost eaten all the sweet berry swirls. And then I wished I hadn't.
They were kissing. Gross.
I cleared my throat three times before they broke apart and realized I was there. Then they were both blushing really hard.
"Sup." Dad said, trying to stay chill like always.
"Ro's eating all the food and we kinda wanna eat Elvin food before we have to eat human stuff for the rest of our lives when we run away." I explained.
"Don't worry, honey, I'll make more treats right now." Mom said. She kissed the top of my head before levitating downstairs.
I went to follow her when I felt Dad grab my arm. He tugged me away from the door and closed it with his telekinesis.
"Ells, you know I love you, right?" Dad asked.
"Of course. Why are you asking?" I countered. Dad sighed, dragging his fingers through his hair.
"These next few weeks are gonna be rough. And... I just want you to know that I have your back. I know what it's like to have all this responsibility as the oldest. And I didn't have any siblings, so you have even more work. I know I usually joke around, but... I care about my family. A lot. More than you'll ever know." Dad said. My face softened and I smiled, hugging him tightly.
"Thanks, Dad." I whispered in his ear.
"Okay, not to interrupt the moment," Dad said, letting go. "But how much did Ro eat?"
"She ate everything except for one sweet berry swirl I ate. And then Macie told her where the treat stash was and she ate all of those, too..." I mumbled.
"Ro, you are so dead!" Dad shouted as he sprinted out of the room. I giggled.
Just as I was about to leave, I walked past a mirror I had never seen before.
When I stepped closer, a face flashed on the screen. I was so startled that I fell back onto the floor. Then I cautiously studied the mirror person.
"Oh, relax. I'm not a ghost. My name is Vertina." The mirror girl said. "The real question is, who are you?"
I tugged out an itchy eyelash.
"I'm... Ellerie. Ellerie Foster. Or sometimes Sencen. My parents switch it up, so sometimes we say Foster-Sencen."
"Mhm... So you're the child of Sophie and..." When Vertina's voice trailed off, I jumped in,
"And Keefe Sencen is my father." I finished.
"Right..." Vertina's eyes widened. "Oh no."
"What?" I asked, alarmed.
"Has anything weird been going on with your mom's abilities?" Vertina whispered.
"Umm, yeah. How did you know?" I replied. Vertina sucked in a breath and ignored my question.
"Jolie said this would happen." Vertina muttered.
"You mean... My aunt Jolie?" I asked quietly.
She ignored my question again.
"Go get your parents. Right now." Vertina said. In fear, I scrambled downstairs.
*****
(Sophie's POV)
Ellerie came sprinting over to me.
"Vertina, the mirror person in your room, said she needs to talk to you right now. Hurry, I think it's important." She said.
I levitated upstairs, and the entire family followed me except for Ro, who kept eating.
I stepped closer to the mirror to activate Vertina's virtual face.
When she saw us, her eyes widened.
"Oh no... The prophecy is becoming true..." Vertina whispered.
"What are you talking about?" I asked.
"Jolie told me about an ancient prophecy that Brant kept talking about when she was with the Neverseen being a double agent. The prophecy said that a supernatural elf would return peace to the Lost Cities." Vertina explained. I sucked in a breath. "And the prophecy stated that the supernatural elf's only weakness was family. And I mean, I know you had family with Grady and Edaline, but now that you have your own family, especially with someone who's been impacted by stellarlune," she glanced at Keefe. "You're going to have abilities out of control until you leave your weakness behind."
"My family is not my weakness." I snapped.
"Project Moonlark stated your personality traits. And Jolie got the paper when she was working with them. It specifically said that you have a strong need to protect others and care for them. You are built with a weakness, something that you created yourself." Vertina countered. "And the only way to fix your abilities is to never see your family again."
