The next morning, before Nadia was to join the debriefing, she was in the mechanics hanger with her best friend Ivy and her team. They had some last-minute checks to run on the jets to make sure they were ready.
Ivy Finch was Nadia's best friend and someone she didn't think she could live without. Younger sister to Reuben Finch, aka Payback, the woman was well versed in naval aviators. She and her brother had grown up in a military family, both following those footsteps, just in different ways.
Nadia and Ivy had been roommates at academy and hit it off like a house on fire. There wasn't much they didn't know about each other. There wasn't much they didn't share with each other, either.
So Nadia knew she had to bring it up.
"Lex has been recalled for this top secret mission."
Ivy sighs. "Yeah, I know. He texted me when he got into town. Told me he was going out with you last night, so he is coming over tonight."
You see, while Lex may be Nadia’s brother and ultimate best friend, he was also Ivy's boyfriend of almost three years.
They had met through Nadia, obviously, but remained friends for quite some time before taking the chance at something more.
Nadia can honestly say she has never seen either of them as happy as when they are together. She had been there for some pretty nasty break ups on both sides, so to see their joy was amazing.
"Reuben was also recalled," Ivy tells her friend.
Nadia nods. "Yeah, I was pretty sure that was him last night. Lex and I went to the Hard Deck to catch up and scope out his potential team. His WSO is someone with the callsign 'Fanboy'. Lex didn't know too much about him."
Ivy shrugs. "Well, as long as he has my brother's back, we won't have any problems. Besides, from what I've heard, they are only calling back the best of the best. So this Fanboy guy has to be doing something right."
Nadia agrees with her before they finish running some more tests. She gives the okay for most of them to be taken out to the tarmac and prepped for the pilots out on the line.
There were only one or two left to inspect, which she had some other mechanics do. Nadia had to look over some information before heading to the briefing.
But as she finished up her paperwork, Ivy came over to her. "Do you have any info on this detachment, or is that what this meeting is about?"
Nadia shook her head. "I've got nothing right now. You know I'll share with you what I can, but if they are recalling this many people, it may just be pretty classified."
The two women could only speculate what was going to happen. But knowing who exactly had been recalled made them worry.
"Do you think they will be okay?" Ivy wondered. "I know this is their job, and they are trained for these types of things. Not to mention, they are the best of the best. But both Lex and Reu have been recalled. I'm scared."
Nadia was quick to grasp Ivy's shoulders. "I will know more after this meeting. But you are still valid for being scared. We knew that was always going to be the case when they signed up for this. It doesn't make things any easier, but you are right. They are the best at what they do. We can only have faith that whoever is teaching does so to bring them home."
Ivy took a breath before thanking her friend.
"Besides, we all know Lex will do anything to come home to you. He would miss you too much. And miss annoying me." Nadia had to add some laughs. The atmosphere was too heavy for her.
And it worked. Ivy laughed lightly. “He's an idiot, but I wouldn't trade him for the world. But I will take you in any breakup, should it happen.”
Nadia gave her a high five. "I should hope so. I was your soulmate first."
Their conversation ended when Ivy was called over to the last jet for final inspection, leaving Nadia to gather the last of her paperwork.
She was given a thumbs up from Ivy, and the last jet was taken to the tarmac. She could only nod at her best friend before she was called out to.
"Novak, time to go."
Nadia took her own deep breath, stabilizing her thoughts and feelings.
It was time to find out exactly what was going on.

Bit of a shorter chapter today but we got an intro to Ivy!! She's awesome and will do anything for her bestie. We love her.
