Several nights later, our babysitter Maggie died. She fell and hit her head real bad. The police investigated the scene. I was sleepy, it was late at night. Mommy was in the living room crying, Andy and I were on the couch.
"Are you kids ok?" Mommy asked hugging us.
We nodded but one of the cops walked in.
"What happened Detective Norris?" Mommy asked.
"It was no accident, there was no way she fell out the window without forces from the inside."
"What do you mean?"
"You were out at work while your late babysitter stayed home with the kids, maybe one of your kids shoved her and the window shattered. I'm not saying your kids are murderers."
He motioned Mommy to step aside so he could talk to us.
"This is Andy, and his adopted sister Danielle," she introduced us.
"A pleasure to meet you both, now, I'm gonna ask you a few questions and you are to answer as honestly as you can."
We nodded, he continued.
"Alright, little lady's first. Danielle, were you in the kitchen/living area at the time of the incident?"
"No sir, I was in my room the whole night up until now."
"Ok...Andy?"
"I didn't do it!"
"Woah there Andy, it's ok, just answer calmly and honestly."
"Chucky did it!"
"Chucky, who's that?"
I swatted him on the back.
"Oww Dany!"
"You can't pin it on your new doll, what the heck's the matter with you!?"
"Settle down and talk with the officer," Mommy said.
"Me and Andy had nothing to do with it Detective, we were in our rooms sleeping. What kind of six year olds are up this late?"
"Andy...tell me more about this doll named Chucky?"
"His real name is Charles Lee Ray, he moves and talks to me like a human."
"Charles Lee Ray, where did you get a name like that?"
"He told me, he said he's a human who died but his soul transferred to this Good Guy doll."
Mommy spoke up.
"Dany, he was your father! That's where they got the name. You see Detective Norris, her father recently died and I adopted her, she's still grieving so maybe this is their idea of helping her cope."
"That's understandable but why are they saying he killed Maggie?"
"I didn't say it, Andy said it!" I said
"Shhh, Dany honey calm down." Mommy said.
"Let me speak with Dany alone please."
Andy and Mommy left the living room. His expression was very serious.
"First of all, I'm sorry you lost him at your young age."
"Thank you, he loved me very much."
"I hate to break it to you but he's...he's not a good man...he's committed crimes you wouldn't be able to process."
"He was good to me, Daddy was there for me from the day I was born. He had a temper but he wouldn't lay a finger on me, he's a good man in my eyes."
"I get that you two were very close, I get it, but I'm telling you the truth about him, he's a bad guy, I have a record at the station on him."
"I refuse to believe he's a bad guy, you can't make me believe it!"
"Well it doesn't matter now, he's in a place where he will be at peace for eternity, you have great memories of him clearly. He'll always be in your heart Miss. Ray."
He motioned Andy and Mommy to come back.
"We will rule it as an accident but if you have any questions or concerns, here's my business card."
Detective Norris gave Mommy his business card and left. I refuse to believe Daddy's bad, I refuse!!
