Maya glanced around the cozy café, wondering how she had ended up here. She shook her head and took a sip of her smoothie, when she felt someone approach behind her.
"Why are you here all by yourself?" Lucas asked as he came to stand next to Maya.
Maya looked up at him. "Do you really want people to believe the rumors in that yearbook?" she asked.
"No, of course not," Lucas replied.
"Then I'd rather keep my distance. That's what everyone else is doing. Riley doesn't even want to talk to me, and Farkle's decided to follow her lead," Maya said dejectedly.
Lucas sat down next to the young blonde. "Maya, this isn't your fault at all," he reassured her. Just then, Zay walked into the café.
"Well, if it isn't the favorite couple," Zay said with a chuckle. "What's going on?"
"Please don't tell me you believe those stupid yearbook rumors either," Lucas said.
"No, no, I don't," Zay replied. "But what's the deal? What's happening with the other two?"
"They're upset with Maya and have stopped talking to her," Lucas explained.
Maya sighed and looked down at her smoothie. "Riley and Farkle have completely shut me out ever since those ridiculous yearbook rumors came out. I don't know what happened - one day we were all best friends, and the next, they're acting like I have some kind of contagious disease."
Lucas placed a reassuring hand on Maya's arm. "I don't understand it either. You've been through so much together, been there for each other no matter what. What could possibly make them turn on you like that?"
Zay pulled up a chair and joined them at the table. "Well, you know how middle school rumors can get blown way out of proportion. Maybe they just got spooked and overreacted a bit. I'm sure if you talk to them, you can clear the air."
Maya shook her head. "I've tried reaching out, but they won't even give me the time of day. It's like they've completely written me off." She paused, blinking back tears. "I just don't understand what I did wrong..."
Lucas wrapped an arm around Maya's shoulder. "Hey, this isn't your fault, okay? Sometimes people just get caught up in the drama and can't see straight. But those two have known you for years - they know how much you care about them. They'll come around, you'll see."
Zay nodded in agreement. "Absolutely. You three have been inseparable since middle school. This is just a bump in the road. Give them some time, and I bet they'll be begging for your forgiveness before you know it."
Maya managed a small smile. "I hope you're right. I miss them so much, you guys. I just want my best friends back."
Maya's shoulders slumped as she continued, "I feel so lost without them. Riley and I have been best friends since we were little kids. We've been through everything together - the good, the bad, the downright crazy. And Farkle, he's been there for us no matter what. He's always been the glue that kept our group together."
Lucas squeezed Maya's hand reassuringly. "I know, it must be killing you to be on the outs with them. But you can't give up, Maya. Those two mean the world to you, and you mean the world to them. This is just a temporary setback."
Zay leaned in, his brow furrowed with concern. "Do you have any idea what might have triggered all this? I mean, those yearbook rumors were pretty juicy, but they can't really believe that the two of you are together without telling them, can they?"
Maya shook her head. "I wish I knew. One minute we were planning our summer vacation together, the next minute they were ignoring my calls and texts." She paused, her voice barely above a whisper. "Sometimes I wonder if they just got sick of dealing with all the drama that seems to follow me around."
Lucas wrapped an arm around Maya's shoulders. "Hey, don't say that. You are one of the most loyal, caring people I know. If anything, Riley and Farkle are the lucky ones to have you in their lives."
Zay nodded in agreement. "Exactly. You've had their backs through thick and thin. They'd be fools to let a few nasty rumors come between you all."
Maya gave them a watery smile. "Thanks, you guys. I just hope you're right, and they'll come around soon. I miss them so much, it feels like a piece of me is missing."
Zay furrowed his brow as he considered the situation. "The only thing I can think of is that maybe Riley still has some lingering feelings for you, Lucas. That could explain why she's reacting so strongly to these rumors about you and Maya. But that doesn't really add up, since you two mutually agreed to just be friends a long time ago."
Lucas shook his head, perplexed. "Exactly. Riley and I closed that chapter of our lives ages ago. We both knew we were better off as friends. And Maya's been like a sister to Riley forever - it just doesn't make sense for her to suddenly turn against Maya over something like this."
Zay furrowed his brow as he considered Lucas' words. "That's a good point. If Riley was really still hung up on you, that wouldn't explain why Farkle is also avoiding Maya. Unless..." He paused, realization dawning on his face.
"Unless Farkle's somehow gotten it in his head that Maya has feelings for you too," Zay said slowly. "And he's taking Riley's side because he's worried about losing her, even though you two already closed that chapter."
Lucas ran a hand through his hair, processing this new theory. "That would make sense, I guess. Farkle's always been a little...overprotective when it comes to Riley. If he thinks Maya's trying to come between them, he'd probably freak out and shut her out."
Maya let out a frustrated sigh. "But that's so ridiculous! Farkle and Riley know how much I value our friendship. I would never do anything to jeopardize that. And I definitely don't have feelings for Lucas - he's like a brother to me."
Zay nodded sympathetically. "I know, girl. But sometimes people's emotions can cloud their judgement, you know? Especially when it comes to matters of the heart."
Lucas placed a reassuring hand on Maya's shoulder. "The important thing is, we know the truth. And we're not going to give up until Riley and Farkle see it too. They're our friends, and we're going to get to the bottom of this, no matter what."
Maya managed a small smile. "Thanks, you guys. I don't know what I'd do without you."
