The bell chimed loudly, indicating it was time for break. Selina sat at a table with her friends, everyone chatted amongst themselves whilst she revised quietly. Selina had an upcoming test and she certainly didn't want to fail. The table she sat at faced the doors to the canteen, giving her a view of whoever left and entered.
Everyday, her friends enjoy teasing her whenever they saw a group of "popular" boys walk by, calling them her boyfriends. Selina had to admit, some of them were cute and she had liked some of them before, but this certain boy was different.
As Selina's head was buried in her revision books, she heard her friends go into awe. She didn't even have to look up to know what they were talking about.
"Aww look Selina! It's your boyfriends!"
Selina decided to ignore them today, since she saw them walk by everyday, today was no different. Suddenly, Hazera grabs onto her and starts shaking her aggressively.
"Oh my God! Selina! He smiled at you!"
Rolling her eyes, she brushed away Hazera's hands. Her friends always said things like that to get a reaction out of her. She was aware that it wasn't true.
"Yea, yea, you always say stuff like that. Let me revise in peace."
As she continued revising, she could hear her friends giggling in the background. Soon, her thoughts wandered off. Her chin rested on the palm of her hand, as she imagined Umar walking past whilst smirking at her. Even the thought itself made her flustered.
Eventually, she was shaken out of her daydream by Amina this time which startled her. As she looked around, the rest of her friends had already packed up and left, leaving just her and Amina. "Come on, let's go! You've revised enough, you'll do fine."
She placed her hand in her pocket, fumbling and searching for her phone until she finds it in her grasp. Selina yanks it out and checks the time; she still had some time left before heading to class.
"It's fine, I'll stay here and finish studying. You can go on without me."
Amina frowns at her. It's true Selina had already revised a lot, but she wasn't ready to head back inside yet. She felt like staying outside for a bit more, to enjoy the relaxing breeze.
"You sure?"
Amina asks for reassurance. Selina gives her a nod and a warm smile. She sighs and shakes her head like a disappointed mother before catching up with the rest of the group. As Selina watches her turn the corner, she returns her gaze back to the revision book.
A few minutes later, the bell sounds again, this time signifying the end of break. She lifts up her head, only to notice the surrounding area to be vacant. Quickly, she packs up and throws her backpack on her shoulder and hurries to her next class. As she turn the corner, there she spots him.
His back leaned against the wall, his leg propped up with his hands resting in his pockets. A sly smirk played at his lips, his eyes analysing her head to toe. Just the sight of him leaning there made Selina's heart thump against her chest. She stands there speechless, she's unsure on whether she should talk, or walk past. Selina had known Umar ever since they were little kids, and all throughout her childhood, she might've been interested in him.
Selina was aware that she was running late to class. The fields and tennis courts were empty, not a single student or teacher in sight. Just the two of them in a corner of the school. Swiftly, she makes up her mind to just leave without saying anything. Every time she passes him, they both never exchange words, they only steal a few glances. So what difference would it make now?
Taking her eyes off of him, she concentrates on the bland ground. As Selina begins to slide past him, a long arm suddenly shoots right in front of her and into the wall next to her. Instantly, she turns to look at him in surprise. Her back hits the wall as he cages her in from both sides. She had nowhere else to look, his eyes were like a mesmerising force, something that lured her deeper the more she stared.
Selina's heart began rapidly pulsing as she nervously gulped. She had never been in a situation like this before, especially with him. As the seconds go by, he leans in closer, until it gets to the point where she could feel his hot breath brushing against her delicate skin; the feeling making her shudder. She stays silent, the only thing audible between them both was the sound of her breathing, which made him smirk.
His lips parted as he began to speak, which was until a pair of skinny arms yanked him away and embraced him. A brunette. Selina's eyes widen as she stares at the two of them. Confusion spins around in her mind as the mysterious girl peered over at her.
"Who's this?" She asks in a monotonous tone. Selina's mouth falls open but no words spill out. She could feel her heart clenching in pain, but she manages to keep a strong face.
"Oh.. Ada.. this is Selina, a girl from my primary"
Selina felt her heart shatter even more at his words. To know that all she was to him, was just a girl from his primary. Tears fill the brim of her eyes but she keeps control of herself and blinks them away. The girl, Ada, snickers at Selina and turns her gaze over to Umar.
"C'mon babe, we have to get to class! We're gonna be late!"
Babe? Selina was perplexed. As she observed them both, Ada seemed pretty clingy and intimate. But as she watched Umar, she had no clue. He was only making it harder for her to understand the situation.
Are they dating?
No.. then why would he come so close to me?
Abruptly, Ada yanks on his arm, dragging him to their shared class, leaving Selina all alone. She throws her head back until the back of her body collides with the rough brick wall. A long sigh escapes her mouth; she was unsure of what to do now. For now, she decided to just head back to class, as all she wanted to do now was to go home.
