"SUPRISE!" She should've known her mother was lying to her, but the child in her just needed to believe her mother this once just because she thought she was finally understanding where she was coming from. She didn't spend months in her room just to rebel against the relationship of her ex and cousin for no reason, and she didn't ignore the subtle invitation to be a maid of honor for that wench for nothing either. She didn't do all of that just to be spiteful, but of course her mother would think she would.
"Thanks." She tried sounding upbeat, she really did, but it all came out dry and irritated as she took in the sight of everyone, she couldn't believe she once liked. Jared, Paul, Brady, Collin, Embry, Quil and Seth...she still quite liked Seth but the two of them had long since drifted farther away the more he hung out with her Ex-boyfriend, and speaking about her Ex-boyfriend, he resided in the corner of the room with her cousin, Emily. They really had the nerve to show up at her house and appear before her face, along with accepting her mother's invitation to this pathetic excuse of a birthday party that was filled with nobody she liked? She didn't see Jacob, could care less where the lovestruck fool was and concluded that he might be stalking that Swan girl that had long since moved here. Fucking pathetic he'll find out the hard way just like she had to that no one was going to love you just because you loved them.
"What a lovely surprise." She could barely hide the disdain and if anyone saw her break in character then no one mentioned it in fear of ruining the mood.
"Isn't it! I set the whole thing up." Her mother appeared beside her holding a purple cake with the words 'Happy 22nd' In big fancy cursive font...she hated purple, thought the color was dull compared to the rest.
"I know you did." A big smile present on her face she murmured under her breath through clenched teeth, "only my mother would be able to do something like this." She could turn right around and go back upstairs but then what did she get all dolled up for? This makeup would go to waste than the next course of action would be to feel sorry for herself for fucking everything up when she could've handled it for just a few more hours.
"Now sit, sit, that girl over there is Macy! Seth's girlfriend!" Her mother cheered, and she finally looked over to see an awkward brunette sitting over on the couch. She seemed very much uncomfortable and if the old Leah was present, she would go over there and try to make the girl feel welcomed, but instead the old Leah was dead, and the new one could care less about the girl that was obviously unused to everyone around her. "We got presents, and even your favorite food laid out." Plate after plate was being brought out and she knew her mother had to have help with some of them, and wouldn't she be a fool not to know who had helped her with all this food in such a short amount of time.
"Chicken Alfredo?" that wasn't her favorite, but she knew who it was. It was a bit sad to see that her mother didn't even know the basics of what her daughter liked, and it showed just how little she had been paying attention to her after all this time. Sad, but just a few hours to go before she could retreat into her room to ignore the world like she had been doing.
"Your now twenty-two years old, how does it feel?" Seth took a seat beside her, Macy silently making her way to take the last remaining seat beside Seth, "feel like I'm talking to ancient monument." He chuckled, and for the first time she cracked just the smallest smile at his little joke.
"If that's what you think of me than what do you think mom is?" The woman would throw a fit being called something so old, but just the thought of it had the two siblings giggling under their breaths as they collected their own little plate of food.
"Can't tell you, she's sensitive about her age, she'll start tearing up about how both her babies are growing up and turning cruel against their sweet mother." He had no problem with the food on the table, and looking at it now, she noticed that he was even slightly buffer and taller than she remembered. She hadn't been holed up that long in her room for her to miss these changes in her brother, had she? She knew she hadn't been the best sister, and even now she was ignoring Macy who obviously was having trouble finding something to start a conversation about. She felt awful, and wondered exactly how Seth was handling his sister slipping off the deepened like she was.
"Yeah." She sniffled, trying to force back tears that were slowly forcing their way out of her tear ducts. She can't cry in front of any of those people, nonetheless the couple in the back that watched her every move. They obviously wanted to say something to her, and it was obvious that they knew speaking to her would more than likely cause a horrible scene to commence.
"I wanted you to meet Macy," Seth smiled, "not like this though, I know you probably don't want to be down here." He moved just slightly so Leah could get a good look at the girl. Brown hair, green eyes, and flushed skin from what she assumed was embarrassment. The girl wasn't the average skinny woman that you would usually see on the reservation, but that didn't take away from her beauty in the slightest. "She's been wanting to meet you."
"Nice to meet you." There were so many words on the tip of her tongue that she wanted to say, but only the basics could come out. That girl was a lot of things, and the sister in her just wanted to drop out a couple threats so that the poor girl understood not to mess this up with her socially awkward brother, but even than those words got tied up in her mouth unwillingly to come forth.
"Likewise." Her plate was simple, a little bit of everything, but she hadn't touched it. Choosing to instead just look at it or look at the other people around her eat to their hearts content. "Hemingway, Macy Hemingway is my full name, I'll take good care of Seth don't worry." Unsure was the first word that came to mind. This girl was unsure if she could do that, but Leah wasn't going to complain. Some girl had to look after her brother, for she wasn't in the position to do so anymore. She couldn't take care of herself at times, but she knew this girl would be able to look after him far better than she ever could.
"If you won't than some other girl might." Subtle words that held a bigger meaning than usual. It might not be said but two of them knew exactly what she was talking about.
"Huh?" Macys eyes snapped over to Seth, and the boy could only shrug and slyly look back at Sam who could only shake his head. There was so much going on that there was no point in trying to correct anything.
"She's joking, you know big sister threats." A little nudge to the side, and Leah went from staring into the poor girls' side to playing with her food. Push broccoli to the left and alfredo to the right. She wasn't going to eat a damn thing that bitch made even if she went to bed starving.
"Oh." She didn't bother telling Seth she was being serious about the little comment, but then again, the main purpose of her sitting here and sucking up her bad mood over this entire party was to avoid commotion from her mother who seemed to be chatting happily with the other elders of the reservation. Just for one night she could pretend that everything was fine and normal.
This was just one night, just one night and after everyone leaves, she could snatch a bottle from the cabinet and take a nice long walk in the woods away from everyone else as she sulked and had her very own little private pity party. She cared not for her birthday for it was only a reminder that she had nothing going on for herself in this life. She was a high school dropout who just freshly turned twenty-two without a clue in the world about what her future was going to be like now that she had the freedom of an adult. She couldn't leave, or at least she didn't want to. This was her home at the end of the day, and she didn't think she could survive in the real world like Racheal and Rebecca were doing. She didn't think she could go out past the reservation and find herself in a way that didn't mean selling her soul to Uncle Sam and working till the day she died like some prostitute stuck in a forever cycle of drug abuse and cynicism. That just wasn't her. And even now, when she watched her mother happily light the candles on the ugly cake and present it to her with a big grin on her face. She didn't have the heart to abandon her mother who had not too long ago lost her husband, her father.
"Blow out the candles and make a wish!" With the sound of everyone singing happy birthday in the background she reluctantly smiled and did as was told. Closing her eyes and blowing hard to the most pathetic wish she could ever possibility think of.
I wish there was someone out there for me and me only.
