The next day arrived and I began my routine of laying in bed mindlessly scrolling through my phone. Soon after Danny burst into my room with a big grin across his lips. He clutched a colorful flyer in his hands that read "surfing lessons" in bold letters. He was jumping up and down pleading me to take him.
After some persistent convincing from Danny, I finally caved. We quickly threw on our bathing suits and headed out to the part of the beach the surfing instructor was at.
Not long after, we made it to the spot and, to my surprise, there weren't many people.
We approached the instructor, who greeted us with a warm smile. Danny's excitement was contagious and I couldn't help but feel a bit of anticipation myself. The instructor introduced himself as sawyer and gave us a quick rundown on what to expect.
Sawyer handed us our surfboards and began exposing the basics. Danny was bouncing with enthusiasm, soaking up every word. I, on the other hand, were a bit more apprehensive but determined to give it a try.
We slowly made our way into the water, the cool waves splashing up to our waist.
I can see why Danny wanted to try this out, we could have never done this in New York.
I couldn't help but think that maybe I don't regret moving here after seeing how happy it made my little brother. We paddled out further into the ocean to catch stronger waves, following sawyers instructions. Sawyer demonstrated how to position ourselves on the boards and how to stand up when the right wave came along.
Danny was eagar to try, so after waiting for the perfect wave, Danny slowly stood up and kept his balance.
I laughed and cheered him on.
"Woah!!" Danny yelled before he went flying off his board.
"I'm okay!" He quickly got up.
"Don't worry Danny, whether it's today or next week, you'll get the hang of it." I reassured him.
When it was my turn, I focused on the tips sawyer had previously given us. The first few times were rough but after a little while I finally rode a wave and it felt- well it felt amazing and so wonderful..but that was until I fell like Danny did.
After a hour or two of surfing or at least for Danny and I it was falling-we decided to head back to our home and try again tomorrow.
"Soooo, aren't you glad you ended up agreeing to take me?" Danny teased.
"I guess." I gave in sarcastically.
But just as Danny and I were making our way out of the water to put our surfboards up, a very, very-did I say very?-handsome guy came racing by on a surfboard.
As he sped past, Danny and I exchanged wide-eyed glances. The guy effortlessly maneuvered through the waves, making it look like second nature. Danny couldn't help but laugh at my sudden admiration, and I felt my cheeks flush. Just as we were about to continue heading back to shore, the surfer turned around and started paddling towards us.
"Maybe you'll get it next time." The surfer said effortlessly which caught me and Danny by surprised. I immediately felt embarrassed now knowing he saw all my fails, I probably looked stupid. The surfer didn't wait for a response before paddling off in the opposite direction leaving Danny and I starstruck.
"Well Danny, I think I've just met my soulmate." I joked.
"Simp." Danny said somewhat disgusted.
Spending time with my brother today was just what I needed, but it reminded me that my friends from back home still haven't texted me. I constantly update them with even the smallest details, but sometimes it takes days for them to send a simple "That sounds fun!" Or "Glad you're settling in nicely." I'm starting to wonder if they've forgotten about me.
