A week had passed, and thankfully, Elara hadn't had any run-ins with anyone supernatural. Instead, the seer had run into another problem: her lack of money. And unfortunately, the only place around that would hire her was Mystic Falls Grill. Elara wanted to bang her head onto the concrete. Why was the only place hiring another supernatural creature hangout zone? But the girl didn't have any other choice; she needed to buy her and her mother groceries and other necessities. So with a very exaggerated sigh, the girl walked into the grill, and immediately she wanted to walk out. In her peripheral vision, she saw almost every single person that flooded her vision.
The old ladies in Elara's head were laughing at her, and it took everything in her not to scream. She truly hated her life. With a hesitant smile, she walked forward to the manager to start her first day. He handed her an apron, and she made her way to the kitchen, her heart pounding in her chest with every step.
The heat of the kitchen pressed against her skin, mingling with the steam rising from pots and pans. Beads of sweat glistened on her brow as she navigated through the chaos, and the clattering of utensils and the sizzle of food being cooked created a noisy racket that filled the air.
Elara quickly fell into a rhythm, her hands working efficiently as she filled orders and replenished supplies. The hum of activity around her was almost soothing, a stark contrast to the turmoil in her mind. As she turned to get the people she was serving some more water, she was stopped by a familiar voice.
"Elara." Elena Gilbert walked over to her, a nervous smile on her face as she glanced at the man walking beside her. "I didn't realize you worked here."
Elara tried to keep her heartbeat steady as she glanced at the man beside Elena, Damon Salvatore. Her life really couldn't get any worse. "Yeah, today is my first day. Kinda nervous." Her voice remained polite, though her instincts were screaming at her to run.
Before Elena could respond, Damon cleared his throat. Elena's eyes widened. "Oh, I totally forgot to introduce you to Damon." Elena looked at Damon, who was smirking at her, and Elara nearly grimaced at the weird thing he was doing with his eyes.
"I'm Elara." The girl nodded at him before looking at Elena. "Sorry, Elena, I have to get back to work now. It was nice talking to you guys." No, it really wasn't nice talking to them, but she wasn't going to tell either of them that. Elara began walking away, but suddenly an icy hand grasped her wrist.
"Why don't you get this lovely lady and me a drink? Free of charge." Damon whispered, his eyes gazing into Elara's. The girl realized he was trying to compel her, and she gulped before smiling.
"Yeah, why don't I get you guys a drink on me?" Elara asked, hoping that was enough to convince the vampire.
Damon smirked again. "Well, thank you for the offer, Elara; we would love one." Elara spun around and grabbed the two drinks for them before muttering that she needed to get back to work. The seer rushed into the walk-in freezer just as her knees buckled. Gripping onto the edge of the shelves for support, she shook her head in annoyance. It was only her first day on the job, and someone had already attempted to compel her; she was just lucky she convinced him. Elara tried not to imagine what would have happened if she had failed to persuade him. The girl slowly got up. She couldn't be gone for too long; it was only her first day on the job.
After steadying herself, the girl went into the dining room, letting out a breath of relief when she saw that neither Damon nor Elena were present. Elara hastily got to work, trying to distract herself from the gnawing sense of dread that lingered. But Elara was sure of one thing after the interaction: she needed to get Sheila Bennet's grimoire and quick.
oOo
"Bonjour, maman. Comment allez-vous aujourd'hui?" a small voice asked. Nine-year-old Elara sat across from her mother, who was lying on the bed. The woman had just given birth to twins, and Elara was memorized by them. Oliver and Violet were their names, and they were the smallest people the young girl had ever seen, though that wasn't saying a lot.
Eliza smiled at her daughter, weakly combing her hands through Elara's hair. "Fatigué, mon amour. Très fatigué." The girl climbed onto the bed with her mother, cuddling by her side.
Silently, she observed her sleeping brother and sister. They only had a few wisps of hair on their heads, and their whole hand was as big as three of Elara's fingers. The girl giggled as Violet
yawned in her sleep.
"Pourquoi sont-ils si petits?" Elara looked at her mother with her big, round eyes. Eliza smiled at her daughter's question as the girl continued to gaze in wonder at her new siblings.
"Parce que je viens de les mettre au monde." Elara's eyes widened as she quickly looked at her mother and back at the babies.
"Ils sont sortis de votre ventre?" The girl protectively covered her mother with her arms, glaring at the small humans. "Ils vous ont fait du mal?" She growled out, no longer happy with the prospect of new siblings.
Eliza let out a weak laugh. "Non, non, ma chère. C'est juste ce qui se passe pendant l'accouchement. Vous l'avez fait aussi, quand vous êtes née." Elara looked down at her hands in horror before muttering a small apology towards her mother.
"Bonjour!" A voice called from the doorway. "Comment vont mes deux princesses aujourd'hui?" Elara's father, Henry, walked through the room, bending down to give his wife a swift kiss on the head before picking up his daughter and swinging her around. Elara's gleeful giggles filled the room.
"Tu ennuies ta mère, princesse?" Henry playfully scolded, tickling his daughter underneath the chin. The girl tried pushing his hand away, but to no avail; instead, she derailed into breathless laughter. "Papa, non. Je voulais juste voir les bébés!" She tried to say something as he continued to tickle her.
"Taisez-vous tous les deux. Vous allez révéler les bébés." Eliza scolded the two of them, but a hint of a smile was lingering on her lips. Henry threw his hands up in surrender before sitting down in a nearby seat, placing Elara on his lap. The man grabbed his daughter's hand and used it to help the girl gently caress the sides of her sister's and brother's faces.
"Wow." She breathed out, "Ils sont si doux." Henry chuckled at her statement as the two pulled back. The man then grew stern as he looked at his daughter.
"Écoute-moi, Elara." He began, softly rubbing the girl's back. "Ce sont tes jeunes frères et sœurs, cela signifie que tu dois tout faire pour les protéger quand maman et moi ne pouvons pas le faire. Tu comprends? C'est votre responsabilité en tant quaîné."
Elara nodded thoughtfully. "Je comprends, papa." The girl glanced at her siblings. She had never thought about having siblings, but now that she did, she knew she wouldn't change it for the world. She knew that she would do anything she could to protect them.
