I didn't hesitate. As soon as Dr. Marcus shouted for me to go. I bolted towards the door, my heart racing. The guards were caught off guard, before they could react I was running away, I was way before them. I sprinted through the corridors, my enhanced senses guiding me.
I reached the maintenance tunnel, the hatch already open. I climbed down, my heart pounding with adrenaline. I didn't even look around If the guards were following me. I just had one thing in mind - escape. The tunnel stretched out before me, dark and foreboding, but it also represented hope. I moved quickly, my bare footsteps echoing in the confined space. I was almost out of breath but I knew i couldn't give up now. My enhanced vision allowed me to navigate the darkness with ease. As I neared the end of the tunnel, I couldn't help but register the footsteps behind me. Panic surged through me, but I pushed myself to move faster.
The faint glow of moonlight appeared ahead. Freedom was within reach. Am I finally gonna escape? Is this real? I was almost gasping for air but i kept running until i finally reached the exit. I stopped in front of the tunnel gate and looked back. I could see the guards running after me in the distance. Then I looked outside again, with a deep breath I squeezed myself through the gate into the cool night air.
I could feel the freedom in my bones. I ran through the forest. My feet hurt from all the branches and sharp stuff, but I had to get as far as possible from the lab. I didn't stop running until I reached a road with a car approaching me almost hitting me. I was freezed with fear as the car came closer, it's break screeching to halt. I folded my ears down, so they'd look like my hair and wouldn't be too noticeable.
The passenger's seat door opened, and a woman stepped out, her face pale in shock. "Oh my god, are you alright?" The woman said approaching me. I was struggling to catch my breath, I didn't even know what to say. The woman analyzed me from head to feet, realizing I wasn't fully alright. My hands and legs were scratched from all the branches in the forest, my feet were bleeding from running barefoot. And my whole body was shaking.
"What happened to you sweetheart?" She said putting a hand on my shoulder. "I-I need help, please." I said as I was still struggling to breathe. "Well of course honey, come.. come with me." She said carefully guiding me to the car. She opened the back door for me and I slowly got in. I didn't sit on the seat, I sat on the ground as i was afraid someone would see me. The woman seemed like she wanted to say something, but she remained quiet. She sat back to the passenger seat and the car got into move.
"What are we gonna do now?" The man sitting behind the steering wheel asked that woman. I was looking up the window listening to their conversation. "Take her to our house." The woman replied. "Are you nuts? Have you seen what she was wearing? A hospital gown. What if she's sick and ran away from psych ward. We have to call the police." The man said. I started panicking inside, scared that they're gonna call the police. If they do, I'm screwed.
"We're not calling anybody, Waylen. Sick or not, she needs help." The woman said a bit angrily, her voice still quiet. They really thought i can't hear them. Either way I was glad the woman didn't want to call the police. "Hi." I heard suddenly. It was a girl voice. I turned around noticing there's a girl sitting behind the passenger seat looking at me. She was probably around the same age as me.
"H-Hey.." I replied, my voice shaky and quiet. "I'm Dani, what's your name?" She asked with a smile. "I'm.. I'm Kinsley." I replied. I was calmer than before, but I was still scared, I didn't know these people. Even tho they seemed nice, who knows how they're really like.
The ride felt like forever. My mind was full of thoughts. What if they call the police? What if they bring me back to the lab? Could I really trust them? I was so tired. My body wanted to get some sleep, my eyes were closing, but i tried to stay awake. I was afraid to fall asleep. Unfortunately, I fell asleep.
