I had no idea where I was going, who I would meet or what the hell would happen. What was I going to do? Didn't know that either. All I really knew was that I needed to find apartment complex A, and I was in the middle of apartments B and C. Growing up in New York State, I didn't really spend too much time in the city. The closest I ever got to being the big city girl I had always dreamed of was being featured in a magazine. A local magazine.
"Shit!" I cursed under my breath, already short-tempered.
My car rumbled, and then suddenly turned off. Was I already that low on gas? And with the car, so did the map leading me to my new, long-term home. I pulled my cell phone from the hem of my pants, and flipped it open with attitude. I dialed the number of the apartment manager, and climbed out from the drivers side of the car. Not climbed.. I practically fell on my ass. I landed with a grunt, brushing myself off as the ringing on my phone stopped.
"Hello, Lukas speaking! Is there anything I can help you with today?" Perky much?
I scoffed at him quietly- hoping he didn't hear it through the sensitive speaker. I doubt he didn't.
"Hello," I began speaking. "I've rented out room 206 in apartment complex A, and I can't seem to find my way there."
I rolled my eyes at the situation, mentally exhausted from driving for hours on end. Angry, I looked back at my powerless car and continued speaking.
"My car ran outta gas.. so I'm stuck between B and C." I complained, rightfully.
There was only silence over the phone, and I felt myself growing impatient. I opened my mouth, just to be interrupted by his strangely happy voice.
"Right.. I see we do in fact have a renter. Full name please?"
I was getting hopeful.
"Alright it's uh.." I stammered. "It's um, Angelina Jade, last name Levine." I never liked my name, I had always felt it was too stuck-up for my personality. I liked the Jade part, but I had always hated when anybody called me Angelina.
He clicked his tongue. "Got it. Okay so, your room is still reserved, and the reservation automatically ends two weeks after the first rent collection isn't paid, but don't worry about that. As long as you give a notice the pay will be late, you should be fine." I heard the twist of his smile through the phone. "But remember! No contact means no room."
I nodded as he spoke. Mocking his somewhat fake smile through the phone. "Is there anyway you could send a tow truck?" I attempted to not sound like I was whining, but I definitely was. I was super tired, and just wanted to slump over in bed already.
"Of course! Between the B and C complex you said?"
"Yeah," I replied, watching as the sky grew darker after each sentence we shared.
I was hoping it would be quick. Out of all spots, there was a really dangerous gang somewhere around here. They just loomed.. lurking around in the dark when they weren't doing whatever the fuck they did. I've heard about riots, dog fights.. even racing. I didn't want to be caught up in the middle of that. But hey.. new life new regrets, you know.
He picked up the phone with a slam, making me jump. "Alrighty! The truck will arrive in about 12 minutes.." he paused. "Look for a dark green truck, that should be the one! I gave them your approximate location as-well. Make sure they can see you."
I smiled, a genuine one this time. "Yes, that's perfect. I'll make sure I do." I said, a kinder tone of voice. He began to reply, but I clicked the hang up button before he could say anything else. I shrugged it off, not wanting to talk to anyone anymore.
I sat, leaning against the hood of the car and just waited. I waited, watching the sky fade until I head the buzz of chatter, and an engine rumbling down the street. I got in my car, watching happily as they got out and hooked my car up to the back of theirs. There was a convenience store barely a block away from the apartments, so I figured before I got settled I could just walk down and get some gas before it was too late. Everything would be okay.
