1930, February 09 ─ TOMORROW’S ORPHANAGE

it was such a lovely day: the sun is high up on the clouds, the leaves of the trees were dancing together with the wind, the sound of laughters the childrens were making, and the melodious music played on the radio.

the quadro was just lying on the grass under a tree’s shadow. they were forming a small circle, eyes closed and breaths on sync.

deafening silence surrounded them until yiella broke it.

“guys? do you think someday, we will leave this place?”

and another silence. yiella’s question was… out of the blue and they are not sure what they should reply to that. to be honest, they are not sure if they would leave this place someday. they are not sure if someone with a kind would adopt them. they are not sure.

“how about when we reach 16, we leave the orphanage?”

“remind you that i’m older than you?”

“then when you reach 16? come on!”

the boys laughed at her. yiella can only pout. she sat up, glaring at them but seconds after, their laughter died down when two boys came up to them: one who is timid and quiet and the other one was smiling.

“hi, everybody!” the four exchanged looks as they have never experienced nor thought that someone might actually come to them.

“uhm hi?” yiella greeted back, unsurely. she glanced at her friends who just nodded their heads ( since among the four, she’s the only one who is good in communicating ).

“i’m ben,” the boy ( smiley as daniel nicknamed him ) said to yiella, offering his hand. yiella accepted it and both of them shook hands. yiella then turned her gaze to the boy who was hiding behind ben.

yiella tilted her head then smiled to him, lending her right hand. “why you hiding there? come here! let’s be friends!”

but the boy didn’t leave ben’s back, instead he even hide himself even more. yiella was confused so she looked at ben. the latter could only chuckle.

“sorry about that. kai was just shy meeting new people.”

“kai?”

“yes! that’s his name! we’ve been friends for a day now and i’m his only friend. but, it’s a bit sad for the both of us since there were no other kids who wants to play with us until we saw you here.” yiella’s heart was touched by what ben said and a bit hurt for them. how come there were kids who don’t want to play with these such lovely angels?

yiella noticed that kai was peeking behind ben, his hand on his shoulder. yiella smiled and took his hand then squeezed it.

“don’t worry, kai, from now on you will have more than one friend and that is us!”

the others went to yiella’s side and smiled at them. kai’s eyes glistened and felt teary eyed because he never have felt like he’s accepted and loved. the six of them formed a circle, leaning in that their foreheads almost touch with one another.

“from now on, we will be with each other’s sides. we’ll stick together and no one can separate us.”

all of them nodded their heads before putting their one hand at the center. “we’ll see the stars and be free someday!” the six of them cheered as their hearts were now beating the same beat with the same dream.
