Valentina had spent the day tirelessly moving among the rows of casualties, her hands deftly administering care. As the demands of the day began to wane, she found a rare moment of tranquility. Retreating to the small tent designated for the nurses' breaks, she sought solace in the pages of her well worn copy of Shakespeare’s Hamlet, a cherished escape from the harsh realities that surrounded her.

She had just immersed herself in a passage from Hamlet when she noticed a folded piece of paper nestled between the pages. Recognizing the now familiar handwriting, she unfolded it with a mix of curiosity and apprehension.

Until I met you, I believed that love was as elusive as a miniature black hole.

Hey! Why don’t you believe me when I say that I’m serious about this? It hurts to hear you dismiss my notes as meaningless jokes, saying it’s impossible for someone to notice a girl like you. :(

You are beautiful! Why do you think otherwise? I just don’t understand.

By the way, do you like Shakespeare? I’ve noticed you reading it these past few days, which makes me even more interested in you.

Valentina sighed, her heart weighed down with conflicting emotions. She struggled to believe the sincerity of the message. Why would someone show such interest in her amidst the chaos of war? Her thoughts were interrupted by the rustling of the tent’s canvas as she adjusted herself.

Determined to respond to the enigmatic sender, she took out a sheet of paper, her fingers moving swiftly as she penned her reply with deliberate precision. She tore the page from her notebook, not concerned with the uneven edges, and placed it firmly between the pages of her book, leaving it there, hoping the sender would notice.

“Whoever is responsible for these notes filled with cryptic words that I don’t understand, please stop. It is not amusing,” she wrote, her frustration evident. Rising from her seat, she gathered her book and the note, leaving the tent with a sense of irritation. As she passed by a group of soldiers from the 1st Infantry division, she remained unaware of the sorrowful gaze of a young man with glasses, just inches away from her.
