Hermione was now refusing to speak to Y/N, Harry, and Ron. Y/N felt terrible. She tried to start a conversation with Hermione on multiple occasions throughout the day, but Hermione wouldn't answer her.
Y/N tried not to let it bother her too much and allow Hermione to cool down by herself. However, it proved to be a difficult task as the two girls sat next to each other in all their classes, and Hermione was usually Y/N's partner for assignments and projects.
Hermione seemed to be determined to ignore her, and Y/N felt rather left out whenever Hermione would talk to other girls in the year other than her. Even Parvati and Lavender tried to get Hermione to talk to Y/N again, but whenever they brought it up, Hermione would give Y/N the stink eye and change the conversation topic.
It was only in Charms that Hermione's icy exterior would melt slightly, that is, if you could count Hermione's forced politeness whenever Professor Flitwick walked by as a melt.
On the other hand, Harry and Ron saw this as an added bonus ("because she was such a bossy know-it-all," said Ron). Harry tried to be a bit more understanding, which was better than nothing; though, even he seemed rather delighted that there was no more Hermione Granger to bother them any more. All they really wanted now was a way of getting back to Malfoy.
Speaking of Malfoy, he couldn't believe his eyes when he saw that Y/N, Harry, and Ron were still at Hogwarts the next day, looking tired but perfectly cheerful. Indeed, by the next morning Harry and Ron thought that meeting the three-headed dog had been an excellent adventure, and they were quite keen to have another one.
"This day is going to be the end of me," groaned Y/N, playing around with a few potatoes onto her plate. "It's so slow."
"That's because you're used to having Hermione around bothering us all the time," Ron said as he stuffed a forkful of mashed potatoes in his mouth. "And don't play with your food. It's rude, y'know?"
"Yeah," added Harry. "She was being a rather big nuisance with all her scolding and know-it-all attitude. This is a nice change of pace if you ask me."
"Don't say that," said Y/N bitterly. "She's just upset... we nearly got her expelled anyway."
Harry and Ron paused mid-chew to turn their heads towards Y/N. They both stared at her for a moment, clearly surprised by her defense for Hermione.
"She's my friend," said Y/N before she paused and looked down at a speck of dust on the table. "Or was, anyway. Okay, she was my first friend. I didn't have many friends before Hogwarts, so..."
She said the last part slowly, almost shamefully. She glanced over at Hermione, who was sitting between Parvati and Lavender, forcibly making conversation with them. They didn't seem very keen on listening.
"Hey, there's nothing wrong with that," said Harry, feeling a bit bad. "Sorry, we didn't know."
"Yeah, what Harry said," added Ron. "You know what Hermione is like, she'll give you the cold shoulder for a few days, and then she'll be okay again. That's just how girls can be -- trust me, I have a younger sister. Besides, you've got us as friends now, too."
Ron's statement got Y/N to look up from the table and turn her focus back to the two boys sitting across from her.
"Really?" she asked, mildly surprised.
"Why?" asked Harry jokingly. "Is it that hard to believe? We're not as bad as Hermione probably said we are."
"Of course we want to be friends," said Ron. "As long as you don't start nagging us like Hermione, you're good to go. And besides, you're pretty nice for someone famous. Usually they're all stuck-up and rude because of their fame, but you've been really pleasant so far."
