I never judged anyone by their looks. But I wouldn't be able to even if I wanted to. I'm blind. And everytime I wake up expecting to see sunlight sneaking in through my half open blinds, I can't help but cry. I was taken away from one thing I loved most. Seeing. I watched and looked at everything with concentration. I never used my eyesight foolishly, like calling someone ugly. I don't know why this had to happen to me, but it did. And the weird part is, I wouldn't trade lives with a person who could see. Never even thought about it.
"Crap Josephine!" I heard a rough voice yell. I already knew what was going on. After I turned blind, my mother brougt home a different man every night. And I wouldn't be able to tell her if I think he's safe or not because I couldn't see him, let alone get into the living room without bumping into something and running into my bedroom for refuge.
"Shut up Paul! My daughter is in the next room." My mother muttered. She never was a whisperer, that made her very hypocritical.
"Mom! I'm awake! Just don't try!" I shouted, before grabbing a wooden staff from the side of my bed and getting up. I held the staff in front of me and began to walk. Have you ever seen a person out on the street walking around with a stick before them, moving it around making sure they don't bump into anything? Well that's how I was. It really works, became on of my best friends.
When I walked into the kitchen I could hear the cringing of the cupboards.
"Mother? Sex in the kitchen? Seriously?" I asked annoyed. Her bedroom was gross enough, but this was the place I was suppose to eat in! This is the place the foods at! The food probably has gone bad by now.
"Sorry, I just couldn't wait." The same rough voice spoke. I could hear my mother hit his chest and murmur "Shut up."
"You're disgusting, get out." I said, raising my stick and holding it with both my hands.
"Is she really about to hit me?" I heard him ask my mom. I could hear her pushing him back a little and patting his crinkly shirt.
"Don't be silly. What could a blind girl do?" She chuckled. And that's when my world ended.
What could a blind girl do?
I can't even read or walk without my staff. I can't even look into someone's eyes and tell them my true feelings! I look like a fucking zombie not being able to do anything without assistance! I'm not mentally retarded but I'm pretty sure I looked like I was.
I turned around and placed my stick down. I began to walk back to my room when I slipped on something. But I don't know what it was... I was blind. I feel flat on my face.
"Shit!" I screamed out, as I pushed myself back up.
"Ha, a blind girl can fall." I could tell he meant to whisper that, but he didn't do a good job. But what hurt the most was I heard my mom chuckling. What a bitch.
"Thats it!" I screamed out before swinging my stick in the air like crazy and running over to the place their voices came from.
"Woah, stop! Stop!|" I heard my mom yell.
"Get out!" I screamed out, tears were beginning to sting my cheeks, but I could care less about wiping them. I kept going crazy until I hit something hard.
"Ethan!" My mother screamed out. I hit him. SCORE! "How could you do this to me?" her voice was trembling. I could feel the limp body under my staff get up. I didn't hit Paul, I hit my mom. She grabbed the end of my staff and pulled me sharply until I could feel her warm breath on my cheek. "You worthless piece of shit!" She screamed out as she pushed the end of my staff, causing my to fall down with it.
"Mom!" I screamed out.
"You're horrible! To think you would act better when you're blind! But you're worse! I hate you!" She grabbed a handful of my hair and pulled me up.
"Mom! Stop!" I yelled as she dragged me back to my room.
"You ruin everything I ever wanted!" She yelled as she pushed me down onto the floor, slamming the door behind me. "Especially my wish to have a perfect daughter!" I crawled over to my bed, the tears were now streaming down my face, reaching all the way down to my chin before dropping down onto my sheets. As I pulled my covers over me, I could hear her open the screen door and walk over the leaves. I knew she went out there looking for him. But why? He didn't seem like anything special.
You ruin everything I ever wanted!
Maybe she wanted Paul.
Before I could think anymore the phone rung. I quickly got the phone from the bedside table and answered,
"Hello? Demming's residence." I said as I wiped the tears off with my shirts sleeve.
"Hello? Is Paul there?" A man with a very slow voice asked. Wait, if Paul's aquantainces knew my house's number, that means Paul must've been hooking up with my mom a lot! Maybe enough for my mom to love him! And want him. Oh I was so stupid and blind! Literally.
"He just left. How come?" I was always a nosey person.
"Just need him, thanks anyway." And the line was cut. I would say he was in a hurry, but since his voice is so slow, I couldn't really tell.
"Ethan! Come out!" My mother screamed, I could hear two pairs of footsteps walking into the house. "Paul's gonna take you on a trip."
