********I was startled from my sleep. My eyes slowly scanned the room in the dark, looking for what woke me up. My grainy eyes were still adjusting to the near ink-black obscurity in my room. The neon clock on my phone said it was 3:33 AM. All I could hear were the crickets chirping. My heart was still pounding in my chest as I lay my head back down on my pillow and then I heard what woke me up. The crickets paused and I could hear someone outside the house saying my name. "ANGIE"............."ANGIE"

My eyes opened wide and I raised my head up to hear better. I did not recognize the voice. Straining my ears as names were running through my head of who could be out there calling my name. And then it came again. "ANGIE"........... "ANGIE"

They were drawing my name out slowly like a snake charmer would try to arouse the snake fro0m its hiding place. It sounded like a woman's voice but it had an odd tone. "AAAANNNGGGIIIEEE" And then I realized, it wasn't a real woman's voice. It was a man trying to sound like a woman. Instantly goosebumps prickled across my skin and the hair stood up on the back of my neck. Who on earth would be outside my house in the middle of the night saying my name? My teeth started to chatter and one warm tear came down my face. Curling up in the fetal position, with my hair matted to my face, I snuggled deep down under the covers. Listening so hard I started to get a headache, ears like sonar detectors, trying to hear any hidden movements or noises.

Finally I worked up enough nerve to creep out of bed. Keeping low to pull the curtain back, just the tiniest bit,to get a peek without giving myself away. I could see clear across the backyard by the moonlight's beams. My room was on the second floor which afforded the best view of where it sounded like the voice came from. There was nothing obvious in the back yard like bigfoot or some deformed creature drooling with his chest heaving waiting for me to show my face, but the crickets were still silenced. I couldn't believe my parents hadn't heard the screechy voice calling my name over and over. Their room was across the house and downstairs from I where she slept. So maybe they were just too far away - which usually came in handy. Right now I was too afraid to wake them up because that would mean walking through the house in shrouded cover, all alone...... Crouching down on, achingly on my knees, trying to see into the dark. Nothing moved. All of my muscles were tensed, screaming in pain from squatting for so long. The crickets started their melancholy chirping, one at a time. Maybe I had imagined it all. Feeling my breathing and heartbeat slowly return to normal, I inched backwards away from the window to crawl back into bed. Pulling the blankets over my head, I took several deep breaths and let them out slowly as a distraction to try to fall back to sleep. But it seemed impossible. I tried to think of anything else like: tomorrow's classes. I knew I had finished all of my homework and already studied for my Spanish test, all before dinner. I had laid my outfit out for the next day. "It pays to be organized" I thought to myself. I know I work right after school and already had my uniform and tennis shoes in a bag. Still the nagging thought, "Who could have been calling my name"?

It couldn't be Jordan. He was my best friend and we had lived next door to each other ever since jr. high. He had moved from Oklahoma. I knew it wan't him because his voice was too low, there was no way he could try to make his voice that high. He was such a scaredy cat anyway, that would probably freak him out more than me. I almost giggled at the thought of him creeping around her house in his spider man pajamas, shreiking my name all eerily like that. He would probably scare himself so badly that he would have to run home and hide under his blankets, kind of like I'm doing right now. I could see him with his normally big brown eyes, scrunched up in a grimace and shaking so hard that he shook the whole bed. That time I actually did giggle out loud. Too bad it was so late, I would love to call him. He almost has an innate ability to calm me down. It seemed that he paid no attention to his flawless good looks, his statuesque frame, his olive skin and huge expressive brown eyes. He always told me most girls annoyed him with their constant lip gloss applying, mindless chatter and cackling and that they reminded him of hens. But he said since I'm so down to earth, we get along perfectly, he would tell her me sometimes he forgot I'm a girl. And I forgot that he was a handsome, available......
