a/n: thought long hard for what I should use as the title for this one, but nothing beats the magic of the iconic "and they were roommates~"

Lena glanced at the clock on the wall, its hands inching towards midnight. The apartment was bathed in the soft glow of fairy lights that draped across the living room. She sipped her wine, savoring the taste as she sank deeper into the couch. Her roommate, Ava, was in her room, probably still working on her thesis. Lena admired Ava's dedication, but tonight, she wanted to pull her away from the books, just for a little while.

Lena had been living with Ava for a year now. Their dynamic had always been easy, filled with shared laughter and quiet moments of understanding. Lena had never thought much about her attraction to women until she met Ava. There was something about her...

...maybe it's the way her eyes sparkled when she talked about her research, or the the way she tucks her hair, or maybe it's the way how her cheeks rival the color of her hair when she laughs that seemed to fill the entire room... that drew Lena in.

Unable to resist any longer, Lena got up and padded over to Ava's door. She knocked softly, then pushed it open. Ava looked up from her laptop, her eyes tired but warm. "Hey, need a break?" Lena asked, leaning against the doorframe. Ava stretched, her back arching slightly, and Lena had to look away to keep her thoughts in check. "God, yes. I've been staring at this screen for hours."

'Same here, I thought about you for HOURS.'

But it's not like Lena could say that out loud, so she just smiled. "Come join me in the living room. I've got wine." Ava's face lit up at the mention of wine. She closed her laptop and followed Lena out. They settled on the couch, the bottle of wine and two glasses between them. "So, how's the thesis coming along?" Lena asked, pouring them each a generous amount. Ava sighed, taking a sip. "It's getting there. Slowly but surely. I just needed a break. Thanks for this." "Anytime," Lena said softly.

She studied Ava for a moment, admiring the way the soft light highlighted her features. Ava caught her staring and raised an eyebrow.

"What?" she asked, a teasing smile playing on her lips.
Lena shook her head. "Nothing. Just... thinking."
"About what?"

Lena hesitated, then decided to go for it. "About how lucky I am to have you as my roommate."
Ava laughed, a musical sound that made Lena's heart skip a beat. "I'm the lucky one. You're always so thoughtful!" They sat in comfortable silence for a while, sipping their wine. Lena felt a pleasant warmth spreading through her, not just from the alcohol but from Ava's presence. The room seemed to shrink, the world outside forgotten.

"Lena," Ava said suddenly, breaking the silence. "Can I ask you something?"
"Of course," Lena replied, her heart pounding.
"Have you ever thought about... us? I mean, more than just roommates?"

The question hung in the air, heavy with unspoken possibilities. Lena felt her breath catch. She looked into Ava's eyes, searching for any hint of uncertainty.

"Yes," she said finally, her voice barely more than a whisper. "I have. More than I'd like to admit."
Ava's eyes softened. "Me too."

Before Lena could fully process what was happening, Ava leaned in, closing the distance between them.

Their lips met in a gentle kiss, tentative at first but growing bolder as they both melted into the moment. Lena's hand found its way to Ava's neck, pulling her closer. The kiss deepened, their tongues exploring each other's mouths with a mix of urgency and tenderness. Lena felt a shiver run down her spine as Ava's fingers traced patterns on her arm. She moaned softly, losing herself in the sensation.

They broke apart, both breathing heavily. Ava's eyes were dark with desire. "I've wanted to do that for so long," she confessed. "Me too," Lena admitted, her voice husky. Ava took Lena's hand, leading her to her bedroom. They tumbled onto the bed, a tangle of limbs and whispered words. Clothes were shed with sense of urgency, each touch igniting a fire between them.

Lena marveled at the softness of Ava's skin, the way her body responded to every caress. She kissed her way down Ava's neck, to her collarbones, then to her breasts, savoring the taste of her. With the same persistence, Ava's hands were everywhere, exploring, teasing, driving Lena wild with need. They moved together, finding a rhythm that felt both new and familiar. Lena's moans mingled with Ava's, their pleasure building with every touch. It was as if they had been waiting for this moment all along, their bodies finally aligning in perfect harmony.

Lena felt herself nearing the edge, her breath coming in short gasps. Ava's fingers found their way to her most sensitive spot, and Lena cried out, her body trembling with the force of her orgasm. Ava followed soon after, her cries of pleasure filling the room.

They collapsed onto the bed, spent but satisfied. Lena pulled Ava into her arms, holding her close. They lay there, the silence filled with the sound of their breathing, their hearts still racing.

"Wow," Ava said finally, a contented smile on her face. "That was... incredible."
Lena chuckled, pressing a kiss to Ava's forehead. "Yeah, it was."

Basking upon the soft fairy lights, they drifted off to sleep, wrapped in each other's arms. For the first time in a long time, Lena felt truly at peace. She knew that whatever happens next, they would face it together... because at this very moment they were no longer just.. "roommates"..

And that was all that mattered.
