Chapter 1
"That was amazing, Mel!" Ed said as he hugged me, back stage. I just finished preforming a new song I wrote about twenty minutes ago. I smiled at the grinning ginger boy, as he continued to ramble.
"Marvelous, spectacular, beau-"
"Nope. Don't think you can just sweet talk yourself out of the bet. Pay up, or you're going to have to find yourself a new place to live, boy." Just before the show tonight, Mr.Sheeran and I had a bet to see if I could write a song just before I go out on stage, and make it work. I win, he loses, that's just another twenty bucks in my pocket. He reached into his back pocket, and handed me a wrinkled twenty. I kissed his cheek, and looped my arm with his.
"The Coffee house then?" I proclaimed.
"Absolutely, but you're buying..."
"Technically," I held up the twenty, "You are."
The busy San Francisco night consits of blurs of people, lights, and scents of sweet food, with a mixture of...well, sewage. Ed kept muttering how much he hated the crowded city life of the bay, but loved the city. I nodded, but honestly, I wasn't paying attention. I was shaking from the cold, and all I could focus on was getting to the coffee house. Ed and I go there every night, for coffee and tea, and on Fridays, open mic night. Those nights are especially grand, because that's when Ed free styles.
We walk in the small, brick covered shop, arm in arm, and wave to the owner, Mr.Ray.
"Hey, there's my two favorite musicians,"
Mr.Ray hands me my Rasberry-Peach tea, and Ed his coffee. Black, with a bit of cream. "Right on time,"
"Of course,"
"How you doin' Ray?" I ask as I hand him my money. Mr.Ray shakes our hands, then leans on the counter.
"Pretty good, actually. How was the gig tonight?" He smiled so widely, I could see his two gold teeth.
"Pretty good,"
"She was amazing, man. As usual."
"I am pretty amazing..."
"conceited," Ed smirked. I nudged him with my elbow, making him spill some coffee on his hand.
"Shit!" He licked the remainder of the coffee off his hand, and nudged me with his elbow, making me giggle.
"Alright, alright you two. I gotta get back to work," Mr.Ray shooed us away from the front counter, so we took our seats at our usual spot in the back. It's our place because it's where we first met, three years ago. Plus, it has a kick ass view of the bay. We sat down, in silence for A while, until I decided to break it.
"I can't believe you're going on tour in a couple of weeks." My pointer finger traced the rim of the tea cup, over and over again. I didn't want to look at him. We've been avoiding this discussion ever since Taylor told him the "great" news. The RED tour, I mean, that's awesome. That's huge! But I wasn't ready to loose my best friend for a year. He sipped his coffee, slowly, and looked out the window.
"We have a show here, in February. I'll stop by, you know I will."
"Don't lie to me, Ed. You'll be too busy."
"Melinda, don't be so dramatic. You know I'll always have time for you...plus all my stuff is at our place. I'll probably have to stop by for some underwear." He grinned, which made me laugh. Just to clear some things up, Ed and I are not dating. We're not an 'item' or a 'thing.'.We're just
roommates. Best Friends. He took my hand, and rubbed his cheek on it, like a cat. He even purred like one.
"Stop it," I snapped my hand back. "I'm mad at you,"
"Mel..."
"What?"
"You know how important this is for me."
I licked my chapped lips, and rested my head on my hand.
"I know, I know, and I'm really happy for you. I truly am, it's just...I'm going to be so alone without you, I'm gonna miss you so much,"
He put his head down.
"That's another thing I didn't tell you, about..."
He looked up, showing only his eyes. Those beautiful dazzling eyes of his.
"What?"
"You're not going to be alone. I don't want you to be alone...that's why I'm having one of my friends stay with you..."
"You WHAT? Do I know this friend?"
"Well...not exactly."
"So you want me to live with a complete stranger for a YEAR, while you're gone? What if he's a rapist!?"
"Mel, I would never invite a rapist to..."
"ED!"
He took another sip of coffee, and took my hand. I tried to calm down. How could he just assume I'd be OK living with some total stranger, living in my apartment, eating my food, using my bathroom!...
"He's my best guy friend. I trust him, Mel. I don't want you to be alone, and there's nothing you can do about it, because he's coming tomorrow night to unpack,"
"WHAT??"
"Calm down,"
"WHO is he?" I slammed my tea, out of anger, forgetting about how hot it was.
"His name is Harry. Harry Styles."
