I walked into the room and immediately regretted it. Adam looked terrible. I could feel the tears stinging at my eyes, but tried my hardest to fight them back. My big brother, the one who used to protect me from the monsters hiding under the bed, and even the ones lurking in my head...

"Hey, Mellie." Adam smiles as I sit down in a chair next to him. His lip is cut, and stitched together.

"How are you?" I try to stay calm, but seeing him like this makes me feel so helpless and child like.

"Beat up. But it's great to see you again. I've missed you a lot, and mom..."

"Stop. Please. It's bad enough I had to watch you get beaten up by my best friend,"

"Melinda." He sighs. "Things are different now. Mom misses you. Ron misses you too, and grandma..."

"Ron? He's one of the reasons I left in the first place, Adam. Mom is an idiot for staying with him anyway, especially after what happened."

"You left on your own. What happened...that was nothing."

"Oh really? How about not supporting me? and my dreams? I'm really happy now, Adam. I play almost every night. My manager was even thinking of putting me on tour."

"Mel, you are so talented. I knew you would make it far, but at the same time, I had my doubts. It's a tough world out here, I was just worried that you'd end up on the streets."

"Well, I didn't, alright? I'm fine, everything is fine."

"No, Mel. Everything is not fine, that's one of the reasons I came down to see you. I wanted to apologize for all that's happened, yes, but I also came down to tell you the news."

"What news?"

"It's grandma. She's...dying."
