(this takes place during the construction of the drill LMAO)

12:24 AM, Peridot's pov:

I sat out in front on the grass, in front of the barn. The Crystal Clods were all 'sleeping,' but I was not one to indulge in such a waste of time. It's a hard concept to grasp: just lying there with your eyes closed, waiting to fall unconscious. Who does that? Certainly not I, the Great and Lovable Peridot.

I heard footsteps coming from behind me, so I turned my head and looked up to see the Pearl. Ugh. She was certainly the most useless of these Crystal Clods. Although, admittedly, her work has been extremely useful to the progress of the drill. The Pearl sat beside me on the pale green grass.

"Can't sleep, Peridot?" The Pearl asked, looking down at me with a smirk. What is that smirk for??

"Why would you want to do something so primitive and time-wasting?" I clenched my fist. "We should be finishing work on the drill!" I complained. The whole concept of sleeping was so useless. How could anyone wish to do so?

The Pearl chuckled. God, it sounded so condescending. I hated that chuckle. Well, it actually sounded sort of cute - NO! I hated it. Stars, these Crystal Clods were driving me mad.

"You know, Peridot, I didn't really get sleeping at first, either. But, after trying it out a couple of times, I find it to be quite relaxing." The Pearl nudged my arm, "You could definitely use the break; you've been working harder than any of us." She smiled at me.

I couldn't tell if I hated or loved that smile of hers, and it annoyed me to no end. "No, absolutely not! I will not be tainted by such baseless drivel. It's stupid and silly, much like everything you Crystal Clods do." I clenched the grass between my fingers and ripped it out of the ground.

The Pearl lifted her cloddy hand and patted my hair. I couldn't help but blush slightly at the stupid, cloddy gesture. "Well, even if you don't try sleeping, the night sky is quite relaxing isn't it?" Even if I couldn't see it, she was attempting to calm me down, able to tell that I was frustrated.

I knocked her hand off of my head as I turned to look out at the night sky. It was a sight I could see at any time, even during my missions for Yellow Diamond. Just looking at stars was a stupid and ridiculous waste of valuable time, and yet.. it did feel quite nice to just stare out at the stars.

I felt something take ahold of my hand. The Pearl had grasped my hand into her own, not taking her eyes off of the sky. I turned my head to look down at our hands, then at her face. My own face turned a darker shade of green, blushing. The moonlight reflecting off of her looked so beautiful... I MEAN STUPID AND CLODDY, OBVIOUSLY!! But, cloddy as she was, she was still slightly enjoyable to be in the presence of.

The Pearl turned her head to looked towards me and I froze. I felt like I should say something, but I also couldn't bring myself to. She looked pulchritudinous (lmao sorry it's just a smart word for beautiful 😭) She started leaning in, and my face heated up an incredible amount.

All I could think about was that television show The Steven had shown me, Camp Pining Hearts. This must've been the ritual practiced so often on there!

Just as The Pearl's lips could only graze mine-

"Hey, what're you guys doing out here?" I could recognize The Steven's voice from behind us.

I instantly stood up and dusted myself off. My face was dark green and I was panicking. "N-Nothing! What are you doing out here, Steven?? Shouldn't you be indulging in your 'sleep' ritual?" I asked, quickly trying to change the subject before he could catch on to what me and The Pearl were doing.

The Steven rubbed his eye with the back of his hand. "I was sleeping, but I heard you guys talking out here. What's happening?" He asked. He seemed to have not put the pieces together yet, thankfully.

"The Pearl was just- uhm- showing me what this 'sleep' is! Yes, that is the course of events. So, if you could just leave us be, then we can begin." I explained, hoping The Steven would take this ridiculous excuse for.. well, an excuse.

The Steven just stared at us, thinking for a moment. But, he eventually shrugged it off. "I'm glad you two are getting along. Just be quieter, please." He yawned before he walked back into the barn. I sighed of relief that he was gone.

"So, Peridot, you want to learn how to sleep?" The Pearl asked with a smile. I sat down again beside her.

"I suppose I'll have to learn eventually. Just show me and be quick so that I can try it myself." I hugged my knees and stared at her, waiting for her to show me an example of sleep. This had better be quick, otherwise I'd probably just move on and do something else.

The Pearl took a moment to process my request before she began speaking. "Well, you're gonna want to lay down, like this." She layed down on her back and shut her eyes. "You'll need to have your eyes shut, and you don't speak at all. The point is to rest and let your body fall unconscious."

As I took in her directions, I took a quiet breath before I decided to try it. I layed down beside her on my back and shut my eyes tightly. I felt tense. How could anyone find this relaxing?

I felt The Pearl's hand take mine, and suddenly I felt a lot less tense. Actually, this was quite nice. Maybe sleeping wasn't so bad.

Pearl's pov:

I could hear loud snoring begin from beside me.
