Chapter one
(Raven's POV)
I grab my water as I walk out of the trailer, being greeted by a few of my teammates. It was my first official year in the Xfinity series, had been moved up from the ARCA league. People said they saw a lot of talent in me, which I guess was true if I was already racing Xfinity. I wanted to eventually race Cup level, but I wasn't sure when I was going to reach that stage. As I walk towards the garage I'm met by a group of reporters, I throw on a fake smile as they put cameras, microphones and other things in my face. "How do you feel this week? Are you confident this week? How do you feel about your car?" The questions all came at once, making it hard to answer.I thought for a moment before I spoke up, "One at a time, please." I said to the reporters, a few backed off as they let each other speak. "How do you feel about this week?" One asked. "I feel good, we have a good car, this is a decent track and I feel like we have a good shot at winning." I reply looking at the camera, which I knew this interview would be all over the media. "How do you feel about Sam Mayer defending that championship and probably being your biggest rival?" Someone asked. "I was watching Sam race back when I was racing ARCA, he seems good, but I could definitely do better." I reply with a small smile. "You two already seem to have a big rivalry, anything going on behind the scenes?" Someone asks. I thought for a moment, I had never really thought about it, I had only talked to Mayer once and it was for about two minutes, I had barely even known him.
"No, there's nothing going on between us." I say with a smile, trying to hide the fact I think I'd like if there was something going on behind the scenes. I glance around, trying to see what other drivers are out, as I spot my teammate I look at the reporters. "Only a few more, please." I say with a smile, they nod as they ask two more questions. Finally being able to step away I take a drink of my water and look at my phone notifications, glancing at them rather quickly. I walk over to find my teammate, "You feeling confident this week?" I ask him, "I guess, it's a big race and we're already looking at playoff points, so we need to do something." He said rubbing the back of his neck. "You'll figure it out." I say giving him a pat on the back.
As I make my way out of the garage I see a few drivers taking, I walk over and realize... Mayer's one of them. I glance around to see what other drivers are there as I join in on the conversation. Sam glances at me, looking me up and down before back at his teammate. What was his issue? The drivers were talking about something, probably something they did a while ago that I wasn't part of, most likely. "Do you guys have any idea if qualifying will be rained out?" I ask looking at the five drivers that were sitting around. A few shrug their shoulders as Sam speaks up, "No clue." He says. He looked nervous, but I could never really tell how he felt, unless it was after a race win; then you could absolutely tell how he felt.
Sam looks at me, "If Qualifying does get rained out who gets pole?" He asks the group. "Probably either you or me." His teammate says. "Looks like the rookie would be starting in like twenty-fifth." He says laughing as he gives me a tap on the shoulder. "Don't feel too bad, we'll only laugh at you if you finish behind where you started." He says laughing as he walks to his garage with his teammate. I watch as they walk away, "He is so getting beat today." I say quietly to myself as I look towards the track. Like seriously, what was his problem?
