Lucy was sitting cross-legged on the living room floor, her favorite teddy bear nestled under her arm. The afternoon sunlight streamed in through the window, casting warm, golden rays around the room. She absentmindedly hummed a tune, but her mind was elsewhere—lost in thoughts about the exciting news her mom had shared just a few weeks ago.

"Lucy, sit down. I have something special to tell you," her mom had said that day, a wide smile gracing her face. Lucy's heart raced as she scooted closer, her eyes wide with curiosity. "You're going to be a big sister!"

At first, Lucy felt a burst of joy. A sibling! She imagined endless games of make-believe, shared toys, and countless giggles filling the house. But as days passed, the reality of it began to sink in. Would the baby take her toys? Would her mom still have time for her? The thought made Lucy frown, and she pushed those worries aside.

Weeks turned into months, and each day her mom grew rounder and rounder, her belly a delightful bump. Lucy loved to gently place her hands on her mom's belly, hoping to feel the little flutters she had read about in her favorite books. Her mom would smile and say, "Just wait, you'll feel her soon!" The anticipation was almost too much for Lucy to bear.

The day finally arrived when her mom announced they would be heading to the hospital. Lucy could hardly contain her excitement and nervousness. She would get to meet her sister! She spent the day with her grandma, every hour feeling longer than the last.

When her mom was finally home, Lucy rushed to the living room where her mom sat, cradling a small bundle in her arms. There, wrapped in a soft, pink blanket, was a tiny girl with a tuft of dark hair peeking out.

"This is Lily," her mom said, her voice filled with love and warmth. Lucy couldn't believe her eyes. This little creature—a real baby, her sister—was finally here.

"Can I hold her?" Lucy asked, her heart fluttering with excitement.

"Of course, sweetheart. Just support her head," her mom said, placing Lily gently in Lucy's arms. The baby felt soft and warm, and Lucy's heart swelled with a fierce love she had never experienced before. Lily cooed softly, and Lucy smiled wide.

Over the next few days, Lucy learned quickly what it meant to have a sibling. There were moments of sheer joy, like when Lily would grasp her finger with her tiny hand or smile in her sleep. But there were also moments of frustration, especially when Lily cried in the middle of the night, waking everyone up.

"Why does she always cry?" Lucy asked one evening, her face scrunching up in confusion.

Her mom chuckled lightly, brushing a strand of hair behind her ear. "Babies cry when they need something, Lucy. It might be hunger, a wet diaper, or just wanting to be cuddled. Just remember, she's still learning about the world, just like you did at her age."

As the weeks rolled on, Lucy started to embrace her new role as a big sister. She would read to Lily, showing her colorful pictures, and sing songs at bedtime. One day, while they were playing on the floor, Lucy looked down at Lily and exclaimed, "Having a sister is like having a best friend who's just a little bit silly!"

Her mom smiled, joining them on the floor. "Yes, and sometimes being a big sister means being patient too. But it's all worth it, Lucy. You'll see her grow, discover, and play with you one day."

As days turned into months, Lucy shared her ups and downs with everyone. She learned patience when Lily needed extra attention, clapped for her when she rolled over for the first time, and celebrated when she heard Lily giggle for the first time.

One evening, as the sun set and painted the sky in hues of orange and pink, Lucy sat next to her mom, Lily sleeping peacefully in her arms.

"Mom," Lucy began, her voice reflecting vulnerability, "is it going to be hard all the time?"

Her mom turned to her, brushing a thumb over her cheek. "Sometimes, yes. But it's also filled with love, laughter, and memories that you'll cherish forever. Being a sibling is like having a little piece of your heart outside your body. It's a beautiful adventure."

Lucy nodded, gazing down at her sister, contentment washing over her. She squeezed Lily's tiny hand gently and realized that while being a sister might come with challenges, it also came with a kind of love that was simply irreplaceable. With each passing day, Lucy was more grateful for her baby sister named Lily—her partner in adventure, her lifelong friend.
