Chapter 1

At dusk, a sudden torrential downpour began. Ye Xuan, carrying a basket of spiritual herbs on her back, bid farewell to a few fellow disciples at the crossroads and hurriedly made her way to her small bamboo house.

When it came to choosing a location for her abode, others had tried their best to be closer to the inner sect, but she chose the middle of Xuanfeng Mountain. This area used to be a spiritual herb field for the sect, but it was abandoned after the spiritual energy dissipated. Conveniently, a stone path led directly up the mountain, flanked by clusters of lush bamboo that thrived on the mountain's spiritual energy, staying green even in winter.

Ye Xuan built a small two-story bamboo house using local materials.

Before she transmigrated, she had lived in a small two-bedroom apartment of just a few dozen square meters, toiling daily in the concrete jungle. She didn't even know what she was striving for. Although transmigrating wasn't her intention, after initially struggling in this unfamiliar world, she now found herself in a relatively comfortable place.

In her original world, Ye Xuan was an orphan without parents. She seemed outgoing and cheerful, but deep down, she was independent and aloof, accustomed to living alone and not relying on others. So, when she finally became an outer sect disciple of the Luofu Sect and was permitted to build her own abode, she unhesitatingly settled in the secluded mountainside.

No one understood her actions. Outer sect disciples needed to watch out for each other to secure a place within the sect. Her behavior made her stand out, leading to much gossip among her peers. Fortunately, Ye Xuan was kind to others, preventing harsher rumors from spreading.

Ye Xuan didn't mind. Unlike the natives, she cultivated immortality purely because being a defenseless mortal in this world was too dangerous. She didn't seek eternal life or the Heavenly Dao; her goal was simply to enhance her self-preservation, living quietly and safely.

Having been swept into this world by a temporal rift, she didn't expect to return. Since she was here to stay, she aimed for a better life. At least, under the protection of a top-tier sect like the Luofu Sect, as long as she didn't stir up trouble, no one would bully her. Moreover... She touched her smooth, tender cheek; being able to retain youthful looks and appear as a young girl was something any woman would desire.

Thus, Ye Xuan was content with her leisurely life in the Luofu Sect, not aspiring to enter the inner sect. She spent her days gathering spiritual herbs, practicing Daoist arts, occasionally hanging out with fellow disciples, living a carefree life.

Today, she had gone out to gather spiritual herbs. As the rain grew fiercer, though it wasn't yet sunset, the sky was already pitch black. Ye Xuan had to light a spiritual fire. Although a water-repelling spell kept her clothes dry, her skirt was blown about by the wild wind, and the spiritual fire in her hand flickered precariously, on the verge of extinguishing.

「Damn weather,」 Ye Xuan couldn't help but mutter, tightening her grip on the basket and trudging up the mountain.

In times like these, she deeply regretted building her house in such a remote location. And she couldn't fly freely within the sect. Finally, spotting the silhouette of her bamboo house in the dark, the spiritual fire was almost out, with just a faint ember left. The surroundings were pitch black, and though Ye Xuan wasn't timid—being a Foundation Establishment cultivator—she couldn't shake the feeling something was off.

Seeing the bamboo house nearby, she quickened her pace, only to trip over something. Startled, she shone the dim light on the ground and, as expected, found a person lying there.
