I stood in front of English class, taking a deep breath before walking in. I immediately strive for my seat, sitting down and focusing on the board. Atias walks in, immediately unnerving me. He sits next to me. I gently place my hands over my lap, squeezing my thighs away from him. My posture hunches. I focus on the lesson, and things seem to be going well.
"Joan?"
"Here!"
"Atias!"
"Here." Jacob glares at Atias. I silently laughed. Jacob absolutely despises Atias. Back when we were together, I'd escape to Jacob's dorm after a beating, or whenever he fell asleep. I'd be crying and hurt, usually shaking and Jacob would help me take care of any wounds I had. He always tried to convince me to leave. What really pushed Jacob over the edge was when drugs were involved. Jacobs loathes Atias. Whenever you even mention his name, a stank look appears on his face.
"Jacob?"
"Present."
"Ruth?"
"Here."
"Artemis?" I love the way he says my name. He always enunciates the separate syllables.
"I'm here." He smiles and writes the name down. Something about the way the light hits his stuble just right sends a wave of chills down my back. I'm sure I was seeing things, but I'm also sure that glare was not the way a normal teacher looks at his students, there's something else. I shake my head and try and focus.
"-So the I'm is always capitalized because it is a formation of two words with the first one being I and an apostrophe separates them. This also goes for words like, I've, I'd, stuff like that." I jot the lecture down in my notes.
"-And that concludes today." I get up along with everyone else, grabbing my bag and swiftly walking out.
"Art!" I turn as I see Jacob. He runs up to me, out of breath with his hands on his knees.
"What the fuck did Atias do?" I chuckle.
"I'm fine, he didn't do anything." His eyebrows furrowed, clearly upset.
"But what did he do? Are you okay? Do you want me to beat him up? Cause, I will-"
"Jacob, I'm okay." His upper lip quivers as he pulls me into a hug.
"Hey! Hey, what's wrong?"
"I- I was supposed to help you, and- and protect you. I promised!" Oh right, the promise. Back when we were in freshman year of highschool. He found out my parents weren't the best. When I walked into class with a black eye, he asked. I told him. It never got too bad, but it definitely was scary and hurt me a lot- emotionally and physically. He cried and promised he wouldn't let anything happen to me. I knew he couldn't stop anything from happening. So everytime I break up with someone like this, or something like this happens, or I come to him for help, he gets so mad at himself.
"Jacob, you were fourteen. Don't be so hard on yourself!" He shakes his head. I sigh.
"You couldn't have helped, I'm fine. I'll be okay." He grabs my shoulders, plucking himself off of me.
"Promise?"
"I will. I promise, Jacob. " A small smile grows on his face. I giggle.
"Okay, you alright?" He nods.
"Call me if you need me," he says. I nod. He walks away. I grin and walk to my dorm. I exit the school, looking around. The sun is setting, it's chilly out, leaves are falling, and critters are running about. A Cheshire-like look sits on my face. I dig through my pockets for the key and jiggle open the door. The dorms are more like an apartment. I mean, they're decent sized, they're not directly next to the school, the walls aren't thin, and it's home-y.
