He was going home.

Stability is such a fickle thing. It had only been a six month period that the alien invasion lasted. After the capture of a well known actor, the alien race had left the planet and even stated that they would protect the home planet of their leader's partner. Their sudden change in attitude left many people skeptical and many still slept with one eye open.
But, time passed all the same.
Civilization rebuilt itself. It only took three months to have the governments up and running again. In four months, people had returned to their homes and jobs. It was only in the sixth month that people began to remember the person who had brought stability back to their planet.
They knew as well as anyone else that such a cruel race must treat their partners just as inhumanly. They couldn't imagine the sacrifices he had endured just so that they could live in peace. People began to set up memorials, shrines, paint portraits, and much more in his honor.
Hu Xing, the savior of humanity.
Hu Xing, unbeknownst to anyone, had actually been back on earth since the third month after the aliens receded. He had safely returned with every hair on his head. In fact, he looked more healthy than most of the worn out people of the time. He began to cover his face and joined the field hands in rebuilding the farms in order to feed people. His days were peaceful, he could no longer go by his name but he was free. In the end that freedom was more than he could ever have imagined.
It was only occasionally when he would be reminded of him. A warm ray of sunshine that hit his face in a way the artificial sun never did , a truly beautiful sunset like from the movies they used to watch, a bed that felt strangely empty without him. They all reminded him of Bai Wei.
But, time still passed all the same.
Events became memories and memories became passing thoughts. As days since the last time he saw him multiplied, the number of times he thought of him lessened. Eventually, he might forget Bai Wei entirely.
Still, occasionally he would see a smile like Bai Wei's was and be brought back to the time they shared together. The morning kisses, the home-burnt breakfast, walking hand in hand through hallways, cuddling on the couch in the evenings. It would all come rushing back to him.
And that was when it would hit him: Bai Wei was not here.
At first, all he felt towards Bai Wei was anger, then gratitude for freeing him, but then slowly that gratitude turned into longing. It was only in the absence of Bai Wei that he realized the place the other held in his heart.
But it was never meant to be.

And so, it was only on days like today when he would catch a glimpse of Bai Wei through the hair of someone at the coffee shop he frequented. Its wispy texture, the silvery shine it had. It was almost identical....
No wait, it was identical!
Hu Xing felt his heart freeze. A whirlwind of emotions came back to him in a flood. He stood up from his seat on the other side of the shop walking haphazardly towards the hair that looked just like Bai Wei's. It was such a unique color, it couldn't possibly be anyone else.
He watched as the figure talked animatedly with the barista at the bar with his back turned to him. The two chatted as she made his order. Hu Xing wondered what he got? Do aliens even drink coffee?
Hu Xing stumbled into a table while walking towards the person at the front of the shop. He looked away momentarily to apologize to the people at the table, but when he looked up. Bai Wei was gone.
Hu Xing rushed out the door. Maybe he could still catch Bai Wei, maybe he was still in sight. But as he tried to find the elusive alien he slowly lost hope. With every turn of his head he came to realize this might truly be the last time he saw the other. Maybe he didn't see him at all... maybe he never would again...

Hu Xing stopped. His breathing ragged and his heart beating fast. He put his hand over his face as he came to accept that last thought. He would never see Bai Wei again.
And that was.... Fine.
Hu Xing crouched down in the alley, people around him looked at him with curiosity. He was by far the largest weirdo on this street. But Hu Xing didn't mind, he was too wrapped up in the memories of Bai Wei.
After a while, Hu Xing gathered himself. He absent mindedly made his way back to his home.
He was currently living in a small apartment building. After the world had reestablished money, he had transitioned back into the entertainment industry. His acting days were over because he now had to live behind a mask but he did well as a manager over a few small time artists. The days were quiet and peaceful, he finally had the freedom he wanted.
But Bai Wei wasn't a part of this freedom.
Hu Xing felt weird when he came to this conclusion. Why would it matter if Bai Wei was a part of his life or not. Bai Wei was his captor, his only redeming fact was the fact that he let him go.... And his smile... and his dimples.... And the way he sleeps with his hands on his chest.
No!
He couldn't be in love with him! There's no way!! No matter if he's adorable or whatever, he's a completely different species!!
Hu Xing mentally rebuked himself while climbing the last of the stairs to his apartment door.
".....Hello"
