Your entire body felt numb. How long had you been out? Head pounding, joints still aching and a sick feeling churning in your gut. Bile rising in your throat. Once your eyes finally opened, blinking before everything finally became clear, you hadn't spoken, scanning wherever it was you were. Your tired gaze locked onto two people you were relieved to see still alive despite your incompetence—and another unwanted guest.

"I know what I saw! Ella está infectada! (She is infected.)" The familiar accent made you sit up despite the pain wracking through your body, letting out a small huff that didn't go unnoticed. Leon's eyes snapped over towards you in an instant, completely ignoring the curses falling from Luis' lips, utterly focused on where you sat across the room.

"If you want to stay alive, then get rid of her." Luis sounded reluctant to say it, his voice nothing but a hushed whisper. You hoarsely spoke up:

"What are you talking about?" You had to clear your throat, shaking your head slightly to collect your bearings before standing up, holding back a groan of discomfort. Ashley was next to you in almost an instant, looking relieved but still frightened. "Nothing." Leon said sharply, catching you off guard. But you didn't push him on it, looking over to Luis.

"Who's infected?" You took a step closer to him, making him curse again, trying to find the right words to answer your question. "Nobody's infected," Leon interrupted, his voice cold, "and we don't have time for this."

Your brows furrowed when you looked over at your partner, seeing his unreadable expression made you confused. His tone was so empty. Why?

"No, fuck that, give me answers." Now your anger was more directed at Leon, walking towards him until you stood directly in front of him. He looked down at you, his demeanor unwavering. Not intimidated in the slightest. You could see he was thinking about something, but whatever it was never left his mouth. He pushed past you and looked out a semi-boarded up window.

More villagers were on the way.

"Hide." He told Ashley, not looking over at where you stood, still confused. You shook your head and looked around for a place where Ashley could hide. Your ears rang, blocking out whatever conversation was being shared between Luis and Leon. They hoisted up a crate and ushered Ashley inside a small crawl space, somewhere she could hide and maybe escape in the meantime.

"Go." Luis said, motioning with his head from you to join Ashley. Leon didn't agree, letting go of the crate on his side so Luis could barely hold it up on his own. You didn't think about it any more, going to grab the gun at your side. What is wrong with him?

"Alright, it's game time." Luis spoke up, looking out the windows and seeing the approaching danger. You were still aching but pushed it aside, most of it being overrun by anger and confusion.

"You done warming up? Hope you stretched." Luis huffed, watching Leon push an empty shelf in front of a window to block out the monsters. A hint of a smile crept up on your lips, which didn't go unnoticed by Luis, who returned the small smile.

"Yeah, now if you shut up, we'd be good to go." Leon said, going to board up another window completely with loose wooden planks he had floating around. "Lighten up, cowboy." Luis replied, keeping a close eye on the monsters outside.

The rain outside was distracting but you tried to keep a level head. It was like everything was the same volume, flooding together in your ears until it became unbearable. Seriously, what happened to you? What's happening to you?

Glass shattered next to you, showing a villager wielding a shovel, staggering closer before you unloaded two bullets into its head. The gunshot sounded amplified—but it made the other sounds finally hushed. You felt like you could breathe again.

Moments passed but they felt like they went by in only a few seconds. You and the two men lighting up the villagers with bullets. The sound reverberated and the smell on gunpowder filled your nose. It had been a scent you'd become accustomed to. Luis didn't help much, loose bullets leaving the chamber of his gun. But, it was the thought that counts right?

Corpses lay scattered, and more of the infected came flooding knot the rickety wooden house. You heard wood meeting wood above you, the sound faint but definitely there. You ran upstairs to the source of the noise, breath heaving before you saw a masked villager with a sledgehammer type thing held tightly in its hands.

Two bullets. One in its neck. The second in its face...? It was hard to tell being obstructed by the mask. But it only served as a temporary solution, the thing still not dying. "Seriously?" Your shoulders fell as you kept a good distance from the thing, observing how it moved and wielded its weapon.

"Alright, asshole." You huffed, not wanting to waste anymore bullets than you already had. You pulled out the knife sheathed in your boot before rushing at it. You dodged when it swung the hammer at you, barely being able to evade it. You dug the blade deep into the back of its neck, dragging it across the tough skin and muscle. It tried to fight against you, swinging the weapon aimlessly.

With whatever surge of adrenaline, you used that strength to your advantage and slid the blade halfway around its neck, its head hanging off to the side but still attached. Of course it wasn't dead, that would be convenient, right?

You gritted your teeth when you felt the hammer harshly meet your arm, hearing bones crack. A sharp cry of pain escaped your lips once you deduced it was definitely out of place if not broken. But you couldn't give up now. You didn't want to be weak again.

You wrapped your good arm around the things head, kicking it in the ribs the opposite way. Flesh squelched and tore before the head and body lay completely separated. Blood stained your fingers and the knife you clung to.

But you didn't have time to breathe before another villagers showed itself. Leon and Luis had rushed upstairs, killing the thing before you had the chance. Leon's eyes slid over to your arm hanging limply at your side. You still pushed through the pain, ignoring it the best you could.

The only thing Leon could read and understand was your eyes. There was a rage behind them, making them look like something completely nonhuman. They were bloodshot, but the normal red had turned to black. You panted, looking at the thing you had killed on the floor, baring your teeth. You looked like a feral animal.

You felt like one.
