gяσνєя ηєνєя єνєη αηѕωєяє∂ нєя question. He just gave Cassandra a pleading look, and the three were racing back to the car.

The boy shoved Kailani into the front seat and slammed the door shut, hopping in the back and shaking the water out of his curly hair.

"Grover," Kailani breathed, looking down at her friend's legs. She couldn't even find the right question to ask before Cassandra pressed her foot all the way down on the gas pedal and drove off. "What are you?"

"I'll explain later," he waved her off, looking in the rearview mirror to talk to Kailani's mother. "We need to Montauk."

"What's at Montauk?" Kailani asked, turning in her seat to look at Grover.

His eyes shifted over to her for a split second before he looked away, turning to see if there was anything chasing after them.

Kailani threw her hands up in the air. "Will someone please just explain to me what in the world is going on?!"

Cassandra's grip on the steering wheel tightened, her knuckles turning white. Her jaw clenched as the rain slammed on the windshield. The roads were filling quickly, like a flood attacking and making sure the three couldn't get anywhere.

"Mom!" Kailani exclaimed, forcing her mother to blink out of her trance.

"Summer camp," was all she could mutter.

Kailani's crazed look made its way back to Grover, who was anxiously tapping on the ground, his head constantly on a swivel. He picked at his hair, but as Kailani looked closer, she gasped. Grover wasn't picking at his curls, she was picking at small horns sticking up through his hair.

Her mouth parted slightly as her eyes scanned one of the people she held closest to her heart. Tears blurred her vision, but she couldn't cry. Not when she was left in the dark without an explanation for what was going on.

She watched as Grover grabbed for his beanie, shoving it over his head and causing Kailani to look away. She crossed her arms over her chest and sunk into her seat, watching the roads fly past her on the drive to Montauk.

The smell of salt instantly filled her senses as she stepped out of the car. With the car lights still on, Kailani could make out the ocean in the far distance. She could hear the roar of the waves over the rain that was still pouring down.

Grover grabbed Kailani's hand, pulling her towards one of the cabins. She glanced back, expecting her mother to be right behind her, but Cassandra was already reversing and driving off.

Kailani felt a pang in her chest, the betrayal of her mother cutting deep. She hoped that maybe Cassandra was just going to get something and then would be right back, but something in Kailani told her that she wouldn't see her mother in a very long time.

Hearing knocks on a door, Kailani turned to see Grover shifting back and forth on his...hooves?

"Who's there?" a voice called out from inside.

"Mrs. Jackson? It's Grover," he replied. Grover then looked over at the confused blonde next to him. "And Kailani."

Mrs. Jackson? Kailani thought. Like, Percy Jackson? Why were they at Percy's?

Grover shook his head. "Look, this is a little time sensitive. Could someone maybe open the door?"

A second passed, and a woman opened the door, blocking her body so neither one of the kids could see inside.
