Elina fidgeted with the loose thread on her sleeve, her gaze drifting out the window. The schoolyard bustled with activity: children laughing, playing tag, their voices a cheerful symphony. But Elina felt like a discordant note in the melody.
"Elina," Mrs. Thompson's voice, sharp as a tack, pierced through her thoughts. "Perhaps you could enlighten us with the answer?"
Elina's cheeks flushed as she stumbled over the fractions problem. A wave of giggles washed over the classroom. She sank lower in her seat, wishing she could disappear.
"Leave her alone, you bullies!"
A voice, clear and strong, cut through the laughter. Elina looked up to see Sarah, the quiet girl who always sat in the back of the class, standing up to Jake and his cronies. A flicker of hope sparked in Elina's chest.
The school bell rang, a welcome reprieve. Elina and Tom made their way to the cafeteria, their steps in sync. They found a secluded corner, away from the prying eyes and whispers.
"Thanks for sticking up for me," Elina said to Sarah, who had joined them.
Sarah shrugged, her cheeks tinted pink. "It wasn't right, what they were doing."
A comfortable silence settled over them. They ate their lunches, sharing stories and dreams. For a brief moment, Elina felt a sense of belonging.
But the moment was fleeting. As they left the cafeteria, they were ambushed by Jake and his gang.
"Well, well," Jake drawled, "Look who it is. The dynamic duo of weirdness, plus their new sidekick."
He reached out to grab Elina's hair, but a sudden gust of wind knocked him off balance. Jake stumbled backward, his eyes wide with surprise.
Elina and Tom exchanged a knowing glance. Their magic, though dormant, was always ready to protect them.
The old farmhouse was a welcome sight after the day's trials. Grandpa, with his warm embrace and comforting words, was their anchor. They recounted the events at school, the highs and lows, the pain and the hope.
Later that night, as the moon cast long shadows across their bedroom, Elina and Tom shared secrets and dreams. They spoke of a world where they wouldn't be outcasts, where their magic would be celebrated, not feared.
Just then, a faint knock echoed through the house. Grandpa's hushed whispers drifted up the stairs, followed by the sound of the front door opening. Curiosity piqued, Elina crept to the window.
A tall figure, cloaked in darkness, stood silhouetted against the moonlight. The figure turned, revealing a face both stern and kind. Elina gasped, recognizing the man from her dreams.
Mr. Blackwood, the emissary from the Blackwood Academy for Exceptional Youngsters, had arrived.
