Yesterday, I almost died.

But as the pretty cream-coloured kitten with leopard print fur scampers towards me, all my anxiety melts away.

"My baby!" I giggle, scooping Lola up in my arms. I press a kiss on the kitten's head and hold her closer as she meows. She's one of the very few things I enjoy about this cafe. That, and the free food.

However, my excitement is short-lived when I sense someone watching me.

I shoot a sideways glance, raising my eyebrows when I catch my coworker, Elijah, pouting at me. Not surprised; he's always waiting to flirt with me. He would probably try to make a move on me even if I was wearing a bin bag.

"What does that cat have that I don't? You've never called me baby," Eli presses a hand to his chest in fake hurt, jutting out his bottom lip. Well, yeah, because you're not a feline. Or cute.

"Sucks to suck." I give him a half-shrug, smiling.

"Good job! I've raised you well, dear friend," Chloe butts in with a clap of her hands, before poking the curly-haired man in the forehead. "You stay away from her or I'll castrate you."

Then the two start bickering and I roll my eyes, looking down at the small cat in my arms that's blinking cluelessly. "This is why only you understand me," I mumble sarcastically. She meows and I smile.

Lola is one of the most adorable cats I've ever laid my eyes on. She's named after my mother due to her leopard print fur, since my mother used to be obsessed with anything leopard print.

My mouth curls into a sad smile as she leaps from my arms. I wish so badly that I could adopt her, but it's not like my manager would ever let that happen.

"Damn, babe, you deserve some dick in your life. You look miserable." Chloe's joking voice shakes me out of my daze, and I turn to glare at her.

"Chloe, that's not it at all!" I cross my arms defensively and huff, "I don't have time for that. Plus, men terrify me."

She hums, fiddling with a strand of her brunette hair. "How come? Is the pretty guy giving you a hard time? He seems like the type to talk you through it in bed."

"Will you stop talking about sexual intercourse and get to work!" Our manager growls from the staff room.

I bite back a laugh when Chloe rolls her eyes hard and mutters 'old prude' under her breath.
We make our way to the café counter, waiting for the customers to roll in.
