Subaru did not grow up in a family environment, after all, his family was taken away from him when he was young, but his grandfather did not leave him alone, his grandfather trained him and made him a great Shinobi.
Emilia was studying at her desk. She had so much to learn: economics, cultures, and tons of historical events. After all, unlike the other royal candidates, she had the lowest chance of success. Sometimes, she wondered why she was born as a half-elf. Not just any half-elf, but a silver-haired one, fitting the exact description of the Witch of Envy.
Puck was playing with the pens on the desk. The cat spirit, the size of a normal pen in his usual form, spent most of the day sleeping in the crystal around Emilia's neck or chatting with her.
"Lia, what's wrong? You seem distracted," Puck asked curiously.
"Nothing, Puck," Emilia said, feeling bored. She just wanted to stop studying. She propped her chin on her hand. "I've been thinking about what Subaru said. Why did he marry Rem? Especially after she tried to kill him," she asked, clearly puzzled. She was quite ignorant about relationships.
"Well, Subaru is a peculiar guy, and he walks like he swallowed a stick," Puck said in a cheerful tone. "Probably, Rem is the first girl in his life. I can't imagine anyone marrying an ice block like him. I think their marriage—"
"And where do you get the right to comment on that?" Subaru's voice came from right behind Emilia, glaring at Puck.
"Subaru, how did you—" Emilia jumped in surprise.
"I am your guardian, Emilia-sama. Even if you don't notice, I'm always watching you," Subaru said.
Emilia was a bit startled by his words. Puck, on the other hand, was both shocked and impressed by Subaru's stealth. Not having sensed his presence made Subaru both impressive and terrifying.
Subaru's words echoed in Emilia's mind. She understood the necessity of him being close to protect her, but it was still creepy. Puck glared at Subaru in his tiny cat form. "Eavesdropping isn't very polite, Subaru," he said.
"It's my job," Subaru said without softening his expression. "Emilia-sama, your safety is my top priority."
"You could do that outside the door or somewhere else in the mansion," Puck said, floating in front of Subaru. "There's no need for you to constantly watch over Lia, after all, I'm here," he said, placing his paws on his hips.
"Secret observation is the best. If a group of assassins attacks her, I need to be close to kill them, Puck-dono," Subaru said, furrowing his brows. "And I don't think you're suited for this job. If I can think about killing Emilia-sama while you're watching over her, anyone can."
Puck was irritated by Subaru's words. "You don't need to be here all the time. Go and take care of your wife," he said mockingly. "I can protect Emilia."
Subaru glared at Puck. "It's my duty. What my wife does is none of your business. It's presumptuous of you to interfere in these matters," he said coldly.
Emilia felt the tension between them and wanted to ease the situation. "Please, don't fight. We're all on the same side. Puck, can you accept Subaru helping me? Subaru, Puck is also important to me," she said in a calming tone.
But a subtle argument had already started between Subaru and Puck. Puck glared at Subaru, saying, "You don't need to be here all the time. Protecting Lia is my job."
Subaru, getting angrier, said, "If I'm not here, it will be easier for assassins to kill her. I don't trust your protection abilities."
Puck was even more irritated by these words. "Don't underestimate my abilities, Subaru. Protecting Lia is my duty, and I do it best," he said.
Emilia tried to calm both sides but failed. "Please, stop!" she said, but they didn't hear her.
The air around Puck suddenly turned cold. "Maybe you're talking so comfortably because you don't know the power of a Great Spirit," he said, and the air in the room started to noticeably freeze.
Emilia's concern peaked; she was afraid for Subaru's life. Subaru could defeat some thugs, but he had no chance against Puck, one of the Four Great Spirits.
Subaru said, "They say the person whose blood hasn't been spilled considers himself a god," and the air around him felt like a hellish heat. Flames appeared on his shoulders, as if the fire inside him was flowing out like a flood. Subaru's eyes glowed with flames. The heat emanating from his body was like a volcanic eruption. His hands trembled slightly, the combination of anger and power providing him with immense energy. Sparks of fire twisted the air around him, making his eyes gleam dangerously. Each step left scorch marks on the floor.
Puck's eyes widened. The mana he felt before him was far beyond ordinary. He had previously sensed that Subaru's mana amount was not impressive. "Did he deceive me?" he thought.
Subaru took a step forward. "Let's see how strong you are compared to the White Tiger," he said, burning the carpet he stepped on.
Suddenly, the door opened, and Rem entered. "Subaru-kun," she said. She gave a slight nod to Emilia upon seeing her and walked towards Subaru. "Nee-sama is calling you."
Subaru opened his mouth to speak but stopped when he saw Rem's trembling eyes, surprising himself. 'What's happening, why am I stepping back? Is Water-type Tao affecting me badly?' he thought. He collected his thoughts and placed a wooden stick with kanji inscriptions in front of Emilia. "Break this if there's danger; I'll be right by your side," he said and left.
Rem's presence in the room had suddenly lightened the tension. The ice crystals around Puck began to melt, and the temperature in the room returned to normal. Subaru, calmed by Rem's reassuring presence, suppressed the flames of his anger. Puck was still in shock, looking at Subaru's mana power. Subaru took a deep breath and said, "Emilia-sama, I am here to protect you. Don't forget that," and left the room following Rem.
