o. prologue ,, the bet.
❛ dude, she's the hottest chick in tree hill. ❜

Capri Martin was an absolute gift to Tree Hill, a complete light shot in the dark. Even with everything she'd been through in the past year, she kept a white toothy smile planted on her face. And even with the pain she'd gone through, she never took her anger out on anyone. She was a sweetheart to everyone...well not everyone.

Per usual, it was a game day, so Capri strutted down Tree Hill High's halls in her cheer uniform, linking her arms with her best friend, Jake Jagielski. Whenever they were spotted together, you'd always spot a smile on her face and the average eye roll but nevertheless, a smile. From the outside looking in, most people always assumed they were dating—— though they both pretended not to know why, but truth was: they weren't. Aren't. And never have.

They were just really close and knew things about each other that others didn't. Jake and Capri just shared a mutual understanding and a love so deep even they themselves questioned why they never dated.

As they rounded the corner, Jake led the way to his locker which just happened to be right next to Tim Smith's locker. And, per usual, Tim, with a cheeky grin, closed his locker shut. "Hey, Capri."

"Hey, Tim." The girl gave him a small but bright smile. "You ready for tonight?"

"You know me," Tim laughed before shrugging his shoulders. "I stay ready. Right, Nate?"

Both Jake and Capri turned to see Nathan standing behind them. He stared down at Capri as if she were the only one standing there. "Right, what?" he asked, not taking his eyes off the girl.

"That we're game ready."

"Always." Nathan walked around Capri, rubbing her shoulder with his before leaning against the lockers beside his best friend. "Capri, you look nice today."

"Thanks, Nathan." The Martin girl stared down at the floor, silently rushing Jake, who'd, on cue, just closed his locker. "We have to get to class. Bye, Timmy."

Watching as Capri grabbed Jake by the hand, Nathan smirked, shaking his head. He'd never had a girl run from him in such a way which only intrigued him more. When Tim looked up, he could see the glint in his friend's eyes which could only mean trouble was stirring up.

Tim chuckled, knowingly, "You're never gonna get that."

"What?" Nathan asked as he and Tim began walking toward their first class.

"What?" Tim asked, mockingly. "Uh, Capri Martin, that's what."

"Says who?"

"Says me." Tim stopped in place, causing Nathan to stop with him. He motioned down the hall as Capri stood with Jake and Brooke Davis who wore a matching cheer uniform. "Nathan, look at her. Dude, she's the hottest chick in Tree Hill. Plus, she doesn't even like you and she likes everyone."

"She likes me..." Nathan rolled his eyes with a shrug. Once Tim gave him a look, he raised his brows. "Well, she doesn't hate me."

"Nathan, she doesn't even cheer for you at the games and she barely responds to you when you talk to her." The two began walking as the bell rang above them. Tim let out a chuckle as he slapped Nate's arm. "She's the one girl in Tree Hill who doesn't fall for your games. I bet you couldn't even get her to go out with you."

"You really wanna bet?" Nathan's interest struck and he grinned like a little kid waking up on Christmas morning. "Okay, let's make it interesting."

"How interesting?"

"I bet I can make Capri fall in love with me."

"That's low, Nate. Even for you." Tim's brows furrowed. He didn't really like this bet because Capri was always nice to him, but he knew once Nathan got an idea, he went through with it. "And what happens if she does?"

"When she does." Nathan stated as if the plan was already in the works. "Then I drop her. The end. She'll never even see it coming."

"What happens if you fall in love with her?"

"Yeah, right." Nathan scoffed and playfully hitting Tim's shoulder. "Tim, grow a pair. This isn't some chic flick."

"Okay, you're on."

With a smirk, Nathan shook Tim's outstretched hand. This was only the beginning, he was just getting started.

Meanwhile, Capri Martin stood on the opposite end of the hall with a weary and worn out smile, unaware of the mission brewing against her. Her father had just gotten her mother's insurance check in the mail. It reminded her that her mother was really gone and never coming back. And that just hurt worse.

Today was just not her day.
