During your break, you discussed the next steps with Ritsu. You decided that it would be best to focus on improv exercises for today before diving into specific scenes. This way, everyone could get accustomed to their roles.
When you returned to the event hall in the afternoon, you were pleasantly surprised to find that most of the ghouls were already waiting. Some were munching on what looked like burritos. As you looked around, you noticed a table laden with all kinds of snacks. Sho must have prepared this for everyone. Only Taiga and Ed seemed to be missing.
"We're all in this together, and it looks like it's going to be a long day," you said, as Sho handed you a delicious-looking sandwich. It only then struck you that you hadn't eaten the whole day. Fighting the impulse to hug him in gratitude, you accepted the sandwich and tried to eat without appearing too ravenous.
"Okay, everyone, listen up. We'll now assign you to a partner and explain your relationship dynamics. Your task will be to improvise the scenes we've given you, which will help you get into your roles and understand the interplay between characters. First up, Edmond Dantès and Fernand Mondego. Subaru, Leo, please come to the center." Ritsu gestured for everyone to return to their seats in the circle of chairs. Some of the ghouls complied begrudgingly, still holding snacks.
As Subaru and Leo took their places in the center, Ritsu continued, "You two are close friends who eventually become rivals. Your scene involves discussing your dreams and goals, which starts off friendly but turns into a tense confrontation. Begin whenever you're ready."
Leo's grin was confident and slightly provocative, while Subaru's expression remained serious. "Well, Edmond, my friend," Leo began, the sarcasm dripping from his words, "what are your grand ambitions for the future? I'm sure they're as noble as ever."
Subaru glanced briefly at you, who was watching intently, before focusing back on Leo. "My dreams? To marry the love of my life and advance in my career. And you, Fernand?"
Leo's gaze flicked to Ritsu and Romeo, who were seated in the circle. His eyes glinted with a mischievous spark. "Ah, Edmond. Your ambitions sound so lofty. But with all your time away, don't you worry that Mercedes might be getting a bit tired of waiting? Especially with all the attention she seems to be getting from, say, certain people in this very room?"
Subaru's jaw tightened, but he remained calm. "Mercedes understands the demands of my career. Our relationship is strong, and she's quite capable of handling herself."
Leo chuckled softly, leaning back with an air of casual superiority. "You sound very confident. But considering your absences, don't you think it's possible that Mercedes might have found someone else to fill the void? Someone who's always around, like Ritsu or even Romeo?"
Subaru's eyes narrowed. He remained composed, but there was a noticeable tension in his posture. "My bond with Mercedes is unbreakable. I trust her completely."
Leo leaned in closer, his voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper. "Trust can be quite fragile. And with someone as prominent as Romeo making his presence felt, don't you think Mercedes might be tempted by the constant attention she's getting from those who are always around? How can you be so sure she isn't starting to doubt your commitment?"
Subaru clenched his fists, fighting to maintain his composure. "I know Mercedes's heart and the strength of our relationship. Your attempts to create doubt will not succeed."
The room fell silent, the tension between Subaru and Leo palpable. Subaru's steadfast demeanor contrasted sharply with Leo's taunting insinuations. The ghouls watched intently, some exchanging knowing glances, others looking intrigued by the exchange.
You, seated nearby, felt a jolt of anxiety as she observed the scene. You noticed Subaru's occasional sidelong glances towards her, which made your heart race. What exactly was Leo trying to do there?
Ritsu intervened to diffuse the situation. "Excellent work, both of you. That was quite intense. Now, let's move on to the next pair."
You and Leo stepped forward for your scene. Ritsu explained, "You two are old friends, and Fernand is attempting to sow seeds of doubt in Mercedes' mind about Edmond. Begin whenever you're ready."
Leo adopted a seemingly friendly but subtly provocative tone. "Mercedes, my dear, you seem a bit distressed. Is something troubling you?"
You, playing your part, looked down wistfully. "I've been thinking about Edmond. His long absences due to his duties... I miss him terribly."
Leo's eyes gleamed with mischief as he leaned in. "Ah, Edmond. He's certainly brave. But given how long you've been apart, don't you wonder if his feelings might have changed? "
Your gaze flickered briefly to Subaru. Seeing him watching closely made you blush slightly. "Edmond writes to me often and assures me of his love. I trust him completely."
Leo's smile turned sly as he leaned in further. "Writing letters is one thing, but what about actions? With such a separation, can you be so sure that someone else, perhaps even someone more present, like Romeo or Ritsu, isn't starting to win your attention?"
Your expression shifted from confusion to resolve. You wouldn't give him this victory. "I'm not interested in anyone else. Edmond is the only one for me."
Leo leaned closer, lowering his voice. "I'm only trying to look out for you, Mercedes. Sometimes the people closest to us can disappoint us the most. It's important to stay vigilant."
Your eyes flashed with determination. "I know Edmond's heart. Your words won't sway me."
As the scene ended, the ghouls exchanged glances—some smirking, others deep in thought. Romeo's expression remained unreadable, but his clenched jaw indicated irritation. Ritsu glanced nervously at you, unsure of your reaction.
Ritsu cleared his throat and addressed the group. "Great job, everyone. Just a quick note—remember, Romeo and I are not characters in the play. Romeo, for instance, was playing the role of Mercedes' son in this play, which might not have been the most fitting example of the tension we're trying to explore."
He cast a pointed look at Leo. "I'm sure Leo's remarks were meant to enhance the scene and not to cause any personal discomfort. Let's stay focused on our roles and avoid letting off-stage dynamics affect our performance. Leo, don't forget that you are the one who wants to win Mercedes' heart. Please read all of your character descriptions closely."
Subaru gave Ritsu a subtle nod, his expression still serious. You took a deep breath, regaining your composure. The group settled back into their seats, the atmosphere a blend of lingering tension and anticipation.
Ritsu adopted a more upbeat tone. "Next up, let's prepare for the next pair. Remember, the goal is to understand your characters and their relationships. Keep up the great work!"
