"I think I fucked up, Paige," Kate told Paige tearfully on the phone.

"Calm down, sis," Paige said, her voice tinged with worry. "What's going on? And where is Jaxon?"

"He's not here." Kate sniffled.

"Where is he?"

"He said he was going to the office, but I know he wasn't being truthful. He is angry and just wants to stay away from me."

"What happened?"

And sobbing uncontrollably, Kate recounted her confrontation with Jaxon to Paige. "I don't know what came over me, Paige. I was just so furious. Now, looking back, it all seems so trivial and pointless."

"Aw, Kate," Paige sighed, offering a comforting tone. "It's okay, everything will work out in the end. You felt jealous and reacted—that happens. But tell me, what made you pick up on their connection? Were they being flirtatious with each other? Or was it just her?"

"No, neither of them was," Kate said, blowing her nose loudly. "It was just... evident how close they are. She was finishing his sentences, and I felt... robbed. He's my mate, Paige. I should be the one sharing that kind of connection with him, not her. The thought suddenly entered my mind and lingered there, refusing to fade. But I kept my cool. I don't think anyone noticed anything off about my demeanor. I waited until they had left before I confronted him."

"You did great," Paige assured her. "I'm not too concerned about you confronting him. What I'm worried about is your outburst about him being a rogue. That was in poor taste."

"I know," Kate murmured in a barely audible voice, tears beginning to flow once more. "I honestly don't think any less of him, but now he believes I do. And that thought is tearing me apart."

Paige exhaled on the other end of the phone. "Have you tried calling him?"

"He left his phone so I can't reach him. But shouldn't he have told me about their history before inviting her to sit at a table with me?"

"Did you tell him about Jeremy?" Paige shot back.

"No," Kate whispered shakily. "He guessed."

"And he mentioned that what happened with Harper was years ago. He probably didn't think it was necessary to delve into all of that. Sometimes, it's best to leave the past in the past."

"But..."

"Are you really serious about her not working at the firm anymore?" Paige asked.

"Now that I've thought about it, it was a silly demand to make. I wish I could take it back," she whimpered.

"Jaxon seems like a very reserved person," Paige said gently. "He might be a rogue, but he's definitely respectful. I don't think you need to worry about other women. He loves you, Kate."

"I know. I can only imagine what he's going through right now. He has no one." Kate sobbed.

"He will be fine."
