Luna
Luna woke up just as the plane was landing, she opened her eyes and saw through the window, the day was gloomy and humid, she liked that though, it was a welcome change after the heat wave they were having in her country, she preferred cloudy and rainy weather for sure, her closet showed it very clearly full of jeans, long sleeves, sweaters and hoodies. She was excited for this new change in her life, she had decided to move following her heart, back home she had what many would consider a good life, a steady 9 to 5 job at a very big and well-known company, up until six months ago an ideal, or so everyone thought, marriage.
She had the "dream life", she tried hard to convince herself about that, but still, deep inside she knew that something was missing, she couldn't quite put the finger on what it was, but she knew it wasn't enough, ever since she was little she got the message that to be successful she had to have professional studies, serious ones, not music, or literature or any of those "hobbies" as her parents and siblings said, better like medicine, law, accounting, business, those would bring success, she gave in, after a fling with music and with liberal arts, she decided to get more serious and she went to college to get a Marketing degree, still she decided to keep photography as a side gig, too expensive to be just a hobby.
It was photography what pushed her to try and travel as much as she could, she went to Egypt, Greece, Turkey, Norway, Italy and the U.S, an adventurous life for an introvert and mostly reserved woman.
It was in a travel to California where she met Octavio, he ex-husband, of Italian descent he had that seductive confidence, he got there when he was five years old, when she met him he was already a mixture of that overconfidence in his looks and recklessness, they were at a bar, he saw Luna talking with a couple of friends and he knew he had to talk to this tall, brunette woman, light brown eyes hidden behind glasses but that made her all the more interesting. She wasn't interested at first, he was too upfront for her liking. They dated for a year before he popped the question, he always liked big gestures, overly extroverted, always meeting new people, always ready to party, it was usually overwhelming for Luna, her family loved him, he had the looks and he was a successful lawyer, he was kind with everybody.
Luna wasn't happy when he proposed, he made it in a public place in front of family, friends and strangers, she loved him but felt pressured to say yes, she would have liked him to discuss it first with her and make it more privately.
They got married five months later, the wedding was a big party of course, she enjoyed herself but still, she felt like she was losing some of her freedom, not because Octavio was a traditional man that wanted his wife always at home with a hot meal waiting for him, but she liked having her own space, being able to get home back from work a relax with no noise and ideally not talking to anybody for a while, Octavio was the opposite, he liked the sound of his own voice and he was ready to go out all the time, they understood each other and luckily they had discussed before about having family and they were in the same page about waiting for the right moment, they both had successful careers and Octavio was happy seeing his wife being a career woman and supporting her growth.
- Welcome to Boston! – said the customs agent taking her by surprise and breaking her concentration. How did she got off the plane and got to customs, she didn't remember, she was too distracted with the memories.
She smiled back to the agent, gathered her luggage and of she went, Boston wasn't her destination though. When she decided to leave her country she played a game with Alex, her best friend, they spun the globe and put a finger on her next destination:
- Kazakhstan, where's that? Are you really moving there? – asked Alex.
- Don't be silly, of course not, I don't even know what language they speak there, I feel we should take this more seriously – said Luna.
