kim hanseol, 26 , is forcefully dragged into a toddler's birthday party.
she is timid and hostile, sitting next to her aged mother who chats with another aged women on the other side. she hears them talk about very purple sparkling outfit, the one that was short and revealing, the one which attracted all the toddler guests attending the party. she finds an unfamiliar little girl approach her because of her reflective purple outfit which she reserved for a night out at the bar. The little girl is fascinated like a moth being drawn towards light. hanseol flinches when her tiny toddler hands fall over her exposed knees. hanseol's stomach flushes with intense discomfort, expressing the need to use the restroom to expel her disgust of seeing more kids gather around one by one, their curious boba eyes scanning her outfit. she turns towards her mother for help.
she quietly reaches out to tap her mother's arm. her mother, mrs kim admiring the little girl infront of her with a soft smile , turns towards her daughter's urgent appeal.
"Is it fine if I leave? ", she says , growing closer to her ear.
Her mother leans forward cupping her ear to hear her properly.
"Is it fine if I leave?", hanseol repeats, desperately wanting her to agree to her. earlier hanseol agreed to attend the birthday party of her neighbour's daughter who turns five. Her mother visited the neighbour's home regularly and had close contacts with her, exchanging motherly sentiments like managing kids and husbands. hanseol felt bad for the neighbour because her husband worked at home, had regular fights with her and had once even threatened to leave home because of their regular conflicts. mrs.kim was too sympathetic to not attend her daughter's birthday party, especially when her daughter liked her and referred to her with a sweet endearing 'aunty' whenever she hung out at their place.
and hanseol hated it.
she hated kids. she shuddered at the name of kids over five years old. she didn't have specific prejudices with infants and new borns, they were nice until they wet their pants and pooped. but kids over five were unbearable, they got on her nerves like her neighbour's daughter. she preferred quiet kids, like the ones who chilled on their own without attracting much attention and listened to their mothers and were obedient—like a doll as her brother put it into words for her.
"can i pleaseeee go?", hanseol requests whispering a bit louder, but as politely as possible to make sure not to hurt the sentiments of the elderly sitting next to her.
"Yeah", her mother nods, approving of her request, although her expressions a little weary.
Hanseol rises up immediately navigating through a sea of toddlers and hurries down the staircase to run back home.
actually , hanseol wasn't going to home straight away , she needed stand by the apartment contemplating whether or not to go back to her mother and tell her she was going to hook up at a bar. she felt as though confidence swept away from her body. hanseol was scared to step forward , as though the entire incident injured her already poor decision making ability. a strange wave of confidence surges through her body because there was nothing wrong in expressing her own discontentment, she heads down the lane with her shoulders up high.
sometimes, Hanseol loses her confidence very soon, for example—walking down the road to the nearby bar may seem like a simple mundane task that attracts no attention nor does it require talent , but for her it feels like a daunting task. she feels concious because of her short dress and keeps adjusting the short length around her bust and thighs. she was not safe from the stares of three boys who stood at the rear end of the bar's entrance, they were holding beer cans , quite visibly intoxicated and admiring hanseol like a million dollar painting. atleast thats what she thinks of herself , a million dollar painting entering the bar for the first time. her heart flutters in nervousness and grounds to reality when a girl roughly about the same height as her, approaches her holding a can of beer.
