The next morning, Nia woke up feeling more content than she had in a long time. After a tender goodbye with Marcus, she headed to her parents' house to pick up her suitcase. The decision to return to California had solidified in her mind, and she needed to gather her belongings from her New York apartment before making the permanent move.

When Nia arrived at her parents' home, she was greeted by her mother, "Good morning, sweetheart. How did everything go with Marcus?"

"It was wonderful," Nia replied with a smile, stepping in the living room and embracing her mother. "It's so reassuring to be with him. I'm excited about moving back, but I still have a lot to do."

Veronica smiled back. "Of course, dear. I'm just happy you're coming home. It'll be nice to have you nearby again."

With her suitcase in hand, Nia hugged her mother one more time. "I'll call you when I make it to New York."

As Nia drove to the airport, her mind buzzed with the details of her upcoming move. The flight felt long and tiring, but it gave her ample time to reflect on the whirlwind of recent events and the new chapter awaiting her.

Upon arriving in New York, Nia went straight to her apartment. The familiar surroundings now seemed distant as she began the process of packing up her belongings. She moved methodically, sorting through clothes, books, and keepsakes, each item evoking memories of her time in the city.

When she finished, she called her closest friends. "Hey, guys, I have some big news," she said, her voice carrying both excitement and bittersweetness. "I'm moving back to California."

"What? When?" asked Jenna, her tone a mix of surprise and curiosity.

"I'm heading back to California in a few days," Nia explained. "I want to see all of you before I leave. Can we meet up at our favorite bar tomorrow night?"

"Absolutely," Jenna replied, clearly eager. "We need to give you a proper send-off. I'll let the others know."

The following evening, Nia met her friends at their favorite bar, a cozy, dimly lit place that had seen countless laughs and tears over the years. The air was thick with a bittersweet nostalgia, each corner of the bar holding a piece of their shared past. The buzz of conversation, the clinking of glasses, and the energetic beats of music created a vibrant backdrop for their last night together.

Jenna, always the emotional one, was already on the verge of tears. "I can't believe you're leaving," she said, her voice trembling. "It won't be the same without you."

Nia enveloped her in a warm hug, feeling her friend's sorrow seep into her own heart. "I know, Jenna. I'll miss you all so much. This place, these people... they've been my home."

The gathering was filled with a blend of laughter and nostalgia as they reminisced of their time together. Each anecdote was marked by the chiming of glasses and bursts of laughter, adding to the lively atmosphere. Nia tried to savor every moment, her heart heavy but grateful for the friendships that had shaped her life.

As the night wore on, her gaze drifted across the room and landed on a familiar face—Derek, sitting with a few friends at a corner table. His face was etched with sadness as he sat among his friends. Despite their earnest efforts to lift his spirits, their attempts to cheer him up seemed to fall flat. The forced smiles and lighthearted jokes only seemed to deepen the melancholy that clouded Derek's expression. Seeing him like this tugged at Nia's heart, knowing the end of their relationship had been painful for both of them.

Eventually, she excused herself to use the bathroom, needing a moment alone to collect her thoughts. As she navigated the dimly lit hallway, she suddenly came face-to-face with Derek. His presence was unexpected, and his eyes were clouded with a mix of determination and vulnerability.
