CHAPTER ZERO | HEY BROTHER
BABY lay silently on her bed, pink headphones clamped tightly over her ears. she was sprawled in what looked like an uncomfortable position, highlighters spread across the flowery comforter. there was a textbook clasped in her hands. ap calculus. her favourite. her phone dinged quietly, interrupting the sweet sounds of miley cyrus. she let out a small sigh, turning her phone over to look at the message.
robby❤️🔥: can i come over? read: 4:23pm
baby🎀: of course. read: 4:24pm
robby❤️🔥: good. i'm in the kitchen with kitty. read: 4:25pm
baby let out a sigh, pulling her headphones off her head and darting out of her room towards the kitchen. kitty had done well for herself, she'd left high school with a diploma and put herself through college. she was now a surgeon, and had taken herself and baby up to the hills. baby may have grown up rich, but she never grew up spoiled. she knew how much hard work her mother had put in to get them to where they are. it actually made her proud.
"hey, brother." she bounded over towards where robby sat, planting a soft kiss on his cheek. robby's hard exterior always softened when his eyes landed on baby. she was his best friend. and he loved kitty just as much. he'd always had a home with them, even if kitty wasn't his mother, she treated him as though she was his. and in a way he was. he shared part of baby, and she loved baby. which meant she loved robby just as much.
"you okay, nounours?" robby loved his nickname. teddy bear. it made him almost forget the hate he carried in his heart. that's the effect that baby had on people. she was a ray of sunshine. she was a human eraser. she took away all the bad and replaced it with love. "yeah. mom's going on a date." kitty had begun cooking as soon as she'd heard the knock on the door. there was only three people it could be, and she would happily feed all of them.
it was always robby needing a place to stay, eli needing a shoulder to cry on, or demetri needing someone to analyse lord of the rings for the forty thousandth time. they were baby's boys, and in turn, kitty's. kitty placed the small bowl of noodles in front of robby, leaning down to give the boy a kiss on the head. "eat, mon cher." robby gave the woman a grateful smile, tucking in to the food in front of him. they both knew he didn't have much, and robby never questioned the random groceries that turned up. but he knew. it was kitty's way of taking care of him the way johnny couldn't. the way he'd take care of baby.
"you can stay here tonight. you know where your room is, sweetheart." from the moment robby was born, kitty had never stopped loving him. it didn't matter how much trouble he got into, or how mean he was. she always loved him the same. almost as much as his own mother. he was baby's brother, and that made it unconditional. she'd take care of him for as long as he needed her to, and probably long after.
"thanks, kitty." his room was decorated nicely, dark blue peeking through behind the posters he'd put up. sometimes it felt more like home than his actual bedroom. it was safe. there was never a chance of the lights turning off.
baby placed another gentle kiss on robby's cheek. he'd talk when he was ready, he always did. so, instead, she just held his hand while he ate his noodles.
"i love you, you know that?" baby's eyes were soft, like they always were. she held no malice in her heart, and robby was almost jealous of that.
"i love you too, kiddo." baby scoffed, pushing his hand away. "okay, you're three months older than me." robby let out a laugh this time, an actual laugh. one that only baby could pull from him. "i'm still older, baby."
