The next morning arrives, and I drag myself out of bed, feeling the weight of the day ahead. I glance at the clock and realize I have just enough time to grab a quick breakfast before heading out.
I meet Ace outside the school. He's already waiting, leaning against the wall with a scowl on his face. "Ready for this?" he grumbles as I approach.
"As ready as I'll ever be," I reply with a resigned sigh.
We head to the local orphanage, a modest building with a cheerful mural painted on the exterior. When we walk in, we're greeted by Mrs. Davis, the head of the orphanage.
She has a warm smile and a welcoming demeanor that contrasts with the anxious feeling in my stomach.
"Good morning, Nova and Ace! We're so glad you're here. The babies are excited to meet you."
She leads us to a bright room filled with toys and baby furniture. As we enter, two adorable boys, Liam and Noah, come running towards us. They throw their small arms around my legs, hugging them tightly. Their laughter is infectious, and despite my nerves, I can't help but smile at their enthusiasm.
In the corner, a baby girl, Emily, is crying softly in her crib. Mrs. Davis gently picks her up and brings her over. "This is Emily," she says. "She's nine months old and has been feeling a bit fussy today."
I look at the three babies—Liam and Noah clinging to me, and Emily's tear-streaked face—and feel a pang of both affection and fear. They're incredibly cute, but the responsibility of caring for them is overwhelming.
Mrs. Davis hands us a stack of paperwork. "Before you take them home, you'll need to sign these forms. Here's a list of the babies' allergies, vaccinations, and any other important information you'll need."
As Ace and I sign the forms, Mrs. Davis goes over the essential details with us. "You'll need to visit daily and ensure they're comfortable and well-cared for. The list here will help you manage their needs."
Ace looks over the paperwork and then turns to me. "How about you spend some time with the babies here at the orphanage today? I'll go find a suitable place for us to live and handle the moving arrangements."
I nod, feeling a bit relieved by the suggestion. "That sounds like a plan. I'll get to know the babies better and make sure they're settled in."
Mrs. Davis gives me an encouraging smile. "Thank you, Nova. I'm sure the babies will appreciate it."
As Ace heads out to take care of the house and moving details, I stay behind, spending time with Liam, Noah, and Emily. I do my best to comfort Emily, trying to soothe her cries, while playing with Liam and Noah, who seem to enjoy the attention.

I pull up to the first house on the list the school provided. It's a well-maintained, two-story home in a quiet neighborhood. The exterior is painted a soft beige, with white trim and a neatly landscaped front yard. A stone pathway leads to the front porch, where potted plants add a touch of color. The large windows give it a warm, inviting feel, and the spacious backyard looks perfect for kids.
I nod to myself, satisfied with the place. It's the kind of house that seems ideal for starting this chaotic project with Nova. It's not too big, not too small, and has plenty of space for the three babies. I make a few calls to finalize the arrangements and get everything moving.
By early afternoon, the movers arrive, bringing in boxes and furniture. I watch from the kitchen as they unload everything, my mind a million miles away. I sit at the table, scrolling through my phone, trying to pass the time.
