y/n: Ugh, my classmates are being so loud and obnoxious today. I can barely think straight.
Unknown: Tell me about it. The guys in my class won't shut up about some stupid movie. It's giving me a headache.
y/n: I wish I could just plug in my headphones and tune them all out. Maybe I should've stayed home sick today.
Unknown: I considered that, but then I'd miss volleyball practice. It's the only thing getting me through the day.
y/n: Oh, yeah you said you play voley ball. That's cool. I didn't know that about you.
Unknown: Yeah, I'm on the school team. It's not a big deal. Just something to do.
y/n typed back, curiosity piqued by this new tidbit of information. She still didn't know her classmate's real name, but slowly, she was piecing together details about him, like assembling a puzzle.
y/n: Well, with how much you seem to dislike people, I'm kind of surprised you play a team sport. Doesn't that require a lot of interaction and cooperation?
Unknown: You'd think so, but I mostly keep to myself. I just focus on the game. My teammates aren't so bad... usually. Nevermind I take it back don't know why I was trying to be friendly that was..nope.
He paused, then added:
Unknown: I'm Kenma, by the way. Figured you should probably know that if we're going to keep chatting.
y/n smiled at her phone screen. Finally, a name to the snarky persona. "Kenma," she said aloud, liking the way it sounded. Her thumbs flew across the keyboard.
y/n: It's nice to officially "meet" you, Kenma. I'm y/n. So, I have a bit of news... I might be transferring to a new school soon. My parents are looking at options, but I'm not sure where I'll end up.
Kenma felt an unexpected twinge in his chest at the thought of y/n leaving probably somewhere far away. He hardly knew her, but their sardonic exchanges had become a welcome distraction from the tedium of school. Instinctively, he found himself typing:
Kenma: Well, if you're looking for a place with a decent volleyball team and slightly less annoying classmates, you could always check out Nekoma High. It's where I go. Just a thought.
As soon as he hit send, Kenma second-guessed himself. Was he really trying to persuade a girl he'd never met to come to his school? He shook his head, blond hair falling into his eyes. Still, the idea of seeing y/n in person, continuing their conversations face-to-face, held an undeniable appeal. He waited anxiously for her reply, hoping he hadn't overstepped.
y/n's heart skipped a beat as she read Kenma's message. Nekoma High? She'd heard of it before, but hadn't really considered it. The fact that Kenma went there added an intriguing layer to the possibility. She chewed her lip thoughtfully before responding.
y/n: Nekoma High, huh? I'll definitely look into it. It would be nice to know at least one person there, even if we've only talked through text. You mentioned they have a decent volleyball team?
Kenma: Yeah, I'm actually on the team. I play setter. We're pretty good, I guess. Made it to Nationals last year. Or go where Hinata goes... wait nevermind he already have a lot of distraction don't make him lose his head.
He debated whether to add more, but decided to leave it at that. No need to oversell it. Still, the thought of y/n cheering for him in the stands sent a pleasant shiver down his spine.
y/n's eyebrows shot up in surprise. Suddenly, the idea of transferring to Nekoma seemed much more appealing.
y/n: Wow, that's impressive! I'd love to see you play sometime. Maybe if I end up at Nekoma, I can come to one of your games.
Kenma felt a small smile tug at the corner of his mouth. The prospect of y/n at Nekoma, of seeing her in the hallways and having her watch him play, filled him with an unfamiliar warmth.
Kenma: Sure, that would be cool. No pressure though. I'm sure you'll make the right choice for you, wherever that may be.
y/n stared at her phone, her heart racing as she processed Kenma's words. He wanted her to come to his games. He wanted her at Nekoma. The thought made her giddy with excitement.
y/n: Thanks, Kenma. That means a lot. I'll definitely keep Nekoma in mind. It would be nice to have a friendly face there, especially one as talented as you!
She hit send before she could second-guess herself. Was that too forward? Too flirty? She barely knew Kenma, but somehow, the thought of being closer to him felt right.
Kenma's eyes widened as he read y/n's message. A friendly face. Talented. The compliments caught him off guard, but not in an unpleasant way. He felt a blush creep up his neck.
Kenma: Thanks, y/n. I'm sure you'll fit in great wherever you go. But if you do end up at Nekoma, I'll be there to show you around. Introduce you to the team.
He paused, then added:
Kenma: It would be nice to have a friend like you here.
Friend. The word felt significant somehow, like a promise of something more. Kenma hit send, his heart pounding in his chest.
y/n read Kenma's message, a grin spreading across her face. A friend like her. At Nekoma. With Kenma. Suddenly, the decision didn't seem so daunting anymore.
y/n: I'd like that, Kenma. A lot. I'll let you know as soon as I decide. But I have a good feeling about Nekoma. 😊
As she sent the message, y/n felt a flutter of anticipation in her stomach. Whatever the future held, she knew one thing for certain: she couldn't wait to meet Kenma in person.
