BECKY POV
As we emerged from the bathroom, Kirk was standing there, his arms crossed, a knowing smirk playing on his lips. He was staring at us, his gaze lingering on Freen and then me, as if he was enjoying our discomfort. We exchanged a quick, nervous glance, a silent plea for understanding.
"Are you both okay?" Kirk asked, his voice laced with a hint of amusement. "You know, what if I-" He was cut off by the arrival of the doctor.
"Mr. Kirk Chankimha?" the doctor called out, his voice a welcome interruption. I breathed a sigh of relief, my heart pounding in my chest. Had he overheard Freen's voice in the bathroom? I quickly covered my face with my hand, hoping to avoid his gaze.
The doctor's words were a blur as I retreated into my thoughts. The door closed behind him, leaving us alone with Kirk, his eyes still fixed on me, a silent challenge in his gaze.
"Are you okay?" Freen's voice was soft as she tapped my shoulder, her touch a comforting reassurance. I looked at her hand on my shoulder, then up at her concerned face. She gave me a sweet smile, her eyes filled with concern.
"I'm fine, Freen," I replied, my voice barely a whisper.
"We can go home now," Kirk interjected, his voice cutting through the quiet tension. He was already moving towards the door, his smile widening as he glanced back at us. It was as if he knew something, something that was making him so... smug. Those smiles of his, they were familiar, but I couldn't place them.
Surely not?
Hours later, we were in the hospital parking lot. The doctor had finally given Kirk the all-clear to go home. The three of us sat in silence inside the car, the tension thick enough to cut with a knife.
Suddenly, a sharp rap on the window startled us.
"Who's that?" Kirk asked, his voice tight with suspicion.
Through the tinted window, I saw a man standing outside, his face obscured by a hat and a face mask. He was just a silhouette, but I felt a chill run down my spine. He was one of them. I knew it.
I clenched my fist, my heart pounding in my chest. Freen and Kirk were behind me, their faces pale with worry.
"Becky?" Kirk's voice was a question, but it was also a plea for reassurance.
I straightened my shoulders, trying to appear calm. "I don't know them, Kirk. Don't open the door."
Kirk nodded, his eyes wide with fear. Freen reached for her bag, her fingers trembling. I fastened my seatbelt, my grip on the steering wheel tight.
"Hold on tight, okay?" I said, my voice barely a whisper.
They didn't question me. They just obeyed, their bodies pressed close together, a silent plea for protection.
"Be careful driving, Beck, okay?" Freen's voice was a soft murmur, filled with concern.
I bit my lip, trying to push down the wave of anxiety that was rising within me. I took a deep breath, my eyes fixed on the man outside. "Bring it on," I muttered under my breath, the words a silent vow to fight back.
I slammed my foot on the gas pedal, the engine roaring to life. I steered the car towards the man, the impact sending a jolt through the vehicle. He went flying, his body hitting the pavement with a sickening thud.
I knew him. He was one of the men who had tried to kidnap me at the 711. They were the same men who had attacked Kirk. They were relentless, and they wouldn't stop until they had gotten what they wanted.
As we pulled out of the parking lot, I saw them. A black SUV was following us, its headlights glinting in the darkness. They were determined to finish what they had started.
