"Matthew Blackwood? That is who I'm against this time?" The folder with my case rest in my hands and I sigh heavily.
"He is one of the biggest lawyers in New York- probably in America—I can't go against him."
"Yes you can. You have gone at several top tier lawyers in New York, beating them all. With all the right steps, you can beat Mr. Blackwood." My assistant, Cara, says.
Peering up at her, I shake my head. "Do you really understand how big this case is? I have waited all my life for this case to come to trial."
"I know how big this case is. That's why I brought it to you. You can and will win this thing."
I stare at her. She must be delusional if she thinks that I can win this case— especially against Matthew Blackwood. I turn my back and stare at the skyline, but all I can see is buildings.
I have never met the man, I haven't even gone against him.
"Elara Sterling?" The attorney knocks on my open door. "Can I come in?"
"Yes." I say, keeping my eyes trained on the buildings in front of me.
"I do have the rest of the information here for you to look at." He says. He drops it on my desk and whispers to me, "Good luck."
When I finally turn to him, I can only nod.
He gives a short nod and exits. Sitting at my desk, I thumb through the file, fiening interest.
"Are you actually going to read this or pretend like you are?" Cara asks. I smile up at her, knowing the fact she knows me inside and out every since I started working with her from day one.
"I'll actually read it soon, just give me a minute."
"I'll leave it to you then," She says and her heels thud on the polished floor, leaving marks on my mind to distract me.
Matthew Blackwood, New Yorks highest male lawyer, will be taking on Elara Sterling, New Yorks highest female lawyer in the highest case in the state of New York.
I imagine that that's what the headline on the local newspapers will read when they get ahold of this. Separating male and female, seeing who will come out on top.
Everyone loves a freak show. Matthew-1 Elara-0.
"I brought you a fresh cup of coffee. I know your gonna need a lot of these," Cara says. "Read through it yet?"
"No I'm currently imagining what the headlines will say when they get ahold of handling this." I joked.
"Well at least they will have something to talk about." She joked back. "Come on, let's get to work." She pulls one oof the two chairs across from my desk to the side and put the other one right in front of me. "What is the case?"
" Hinderling vs Wall Street."
"Isn't there already a case where its something vs Wall Street?" Cara asks.
"Yes but this one has a lot of stuff behind it, it's not just a city case, it's a high stakes case."
"Woo good lord this is gonna be fun." She exclaims. "Can not wait to hear more about it."
I take through her all of paperwork, explaining each page, each paragraph, every sentence in great detail.
"So..this case is very high stuff, a lot of trafficing in it, are you any more sure that you can't take this on?" She says.
"I can take on this case, I can't take on Matthtew Blackwood. Im sure of it."
"Just pretend that he is another lawyer. Or study his technique."
"Cara how do you think I got into law school?" I smirk at her as she meets my gaze. "I only train from the best. And the best, Is Matthew Blackwood."
