One: Listen To The Music

For very obvious reasons, this step is single-handedly the most important step to joining a fandom. (insert eye roll)

So with that being said, listen to the music! I'm pretty sure that no one in this world is a part of a fandom without actually liking the person/ band's music. After all, that's why you become a fan, right?

Right! (duh, I'm always right)

Go on youtube and search for the artist's name

It is crucial to type in the name correctly, double-check for mistakes. It may not seem like a serious thing to type the name correctly, but just trust me, if you fail to do so, it may have life-threatening results! (nah, not really, but when I first heard of Pierce The Veil, I typed Piss The Veil (I legit thought that was their name kms) and let just say I watched a bunch of weird videos wondering what the fuck my life had become)

Watch the music video (or just audio depending on preference) of their most popular song

Basically, you click on the most popular song that they have, or you could go on the youtube playlist bar thingy (I don't know youtube terminology, sue me) and go through the playlist of all of their most popular songs. This way, you'll get to hear the main songs that made the band/artist popular in the first place.

Listening to old ones will especially help, since these are the ones that have helped them gain the most fans and recognition. The popular songs that are newer will show how popular their new album is.

If you make it to this step and realize that the their music sucks ass (this has happened to me and it sucks, especially when the band name was cool as fuck (so cool I still wanted to buy a t-shirt, even though I didn't enjoy their music)) then try these steps with a new artist, cause if you can't make it through this step and think "hey they're at least decent" then you most likely won't love the rest of what they have to offer (this is scientifically proven guys (okay maybe not but shh just listen to me)).

If you hate their music, then it's obviously okay, don't feel obligated to like anything. But don't put hate under any of their music, because that' NOT okay. There's a difference between constructive criticism and being an asshole (:

Look through the rest of their songs, and learn some lyrics to them

Every artist that you listen to will always have those few songs that emotionally appeal to you, or they're just hella catchy and cool. When you find these fav songs, take the time to learn the lyrics to the songs, and take a deeper listen to the meaning of them. If you know at least a few songs, it can make it easier for you to talk about their music to other fans and/or recommend some songs to others.

Well that's all you really need to do to beat the first step of joining a fandom!
