The morning sun filtered through the blinds, casting long shadows across the dorm room. Ethan stirred, the weight of the new day pressing down on him. Today was the first day of classes, a daunting prospect that filled him with a mix of excitement and dread.

He got dressed quickly, opting for a pair of jeans and a plain t-shirt. He didn't want to draw attention to himself on his first day. As he was about to leave, Liam stumbled out of bed, rubbing his eyes.

"Morning, sleepyhead," Ethan said with a grin.

Liam groaned. "Don't talk to me before coffee," he mumbled, disappearing into the bathroom.

Ethan grabbed his backpack and headed out the door. His first class was English Literature, and he was both nervous and eager to start. The lecture hall was packed, and Ethan managed to find an empty seat near the back. He took out his notebook and pen, trying to look as prepared as possible.

The professor, a stern-looking woman with short gray hair, began the lecture with a dry recitation of the course syllabus. Ethan tried to pay attention, but his mind kept wandering. He glanced around the room, taking in the sea of unfamiliar faces.

After class, Ethan decided to explore the campus. He wandered through the quad, admiring the old brick buildings and the lush green lawns. The campus was bustling with activity, and he felt a sense of belonging for the first time.

He bumped into Liam and Alex near the student center. They were surrounded by a group of people, laughing and talking loudly. Ethan hesitated, unsure if he should join them.

"Hey, Ethan," Liam said, spotting him. "Come on over."

Ethan took a deep breath and walked towards them. Alex gave him a lazy grin. "Finally decided to join the living?" he teased.

Ethan ignored him and focused on Liam. "What are you guys doing?"

"We're trying to figure out where to go for lunch," Liam said. "Any suggestions?"

Ethan shrugged. "I don't know, I haven't really explored the campus yet."

"Come on, let's check out the new food court," Alex said, grabbing Ethan's arm and pulling him along.

They found a table in the crowded food court and ordered their food. As they ate, they talked about their classes and their plans for the semester. Ethan was surprised to find himself enjoying their company. Alex, in particular, was surprisingly insightful, and he had a knack for making people laugh.

After lunch, they decided to hit the library to start working on their assignments. Ethan was relieved to have some quiet time to focus on his studies. He spent the rest of the afternoon poring over books and articles, trying to make sense of the complex literary theories he was being taught.

When he finally emerged from the library, the sun was beginning to set. He decided to take a walk to clear his head. As he strolled through the campus, he couldn't help but feel a sense of peace and contentment. This was his new life, and he was starting to embrace it.

As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting long shadows across the campus, Ethan found himself drawn back to the dorm. The day had been a whirlwind of new experiences, and he was exhausted but exhilarated.

Liam was already back, sprawled on his bed with a video game controller in his hands. Alex was nowhere to be found, probably off on some adventure. Ethan tossed his backpack onto a chair and flopped down on his bed.

"Tough day?" Liam asked, not looking up from the screen.

"Yeah, kinda," Ethan replied. "It was a lot to take in."

"Welcome to college," Liam said with a grin. "It only gets crazier from here."

They talked for a while about their classes, sharing stories about eccentric professors and challenging assignments. As they talked, Ethan realized how much he enjoyed Liam's company. He was easygoing and supportive, and he had a knack for making people feel at ease.

Just as they were starting to wind down, Alex burst into the room, his face flushed with excitement. "You guys won't believe what happened!" he exclaimed.

Liam and Ethan exchanged amused glances. "Spill it," Liam said.

"I met this girl at the party," Alex said, his eyes sparkling. "She's amazing. We hit it off right away."

Ethan felt a pang of disappointment. He'd been hoping for a chance to get to know Alex better, but it seemed like the other guy was already caught up in a new fling.

"That's cool, man," Liam said. "But don't get your hopes up too high."

Alex rolled his eyes. "I know, I know. But this one's different. She's actually really smart and funny."

They talked about Alex's new love interest for a while, and Ethan tried to listen, but his mind was elsewhere. He was starting to feel like an outsider in his own dorm room.

Finally, he couldn't take it anymore. "Hey, I'm gonna head to bed," he said, standing up.

Liam nodded. "Goodnight, man."

Alex glanced up from his phone. "See ya, Ethan."

As Ethan climbed into bed, he couldn't shake the feeling of loneliness. He missed his family, his friends, and the familiar comforts of home. But he also knew that this was a chance to start over, to create a new life for himself.

He closed his eyes and tried to focus on the positive. He had made it through the first day of classes, and he had started to make friends. Things were looking up.

As he drifted off to sleep, he dreamed of a place where he could be himself without fear or judgment. A place where he could belong.
