Today was the day.

After weeks of self pep talks, getting cold feet, and hopeless pining for a certain curly haired blonde, Cole had finally decided they couldn't put this off any longer.

The Lark had spent the last few years performing, telling the tales of the Harkers in honor of them.

Now they were all in their late teens, still travelling with their songs and stories.

Cole stood outside their tent, nervously gripping something small in their palm.

"I can do this.. I can-"

Their hushed assurances to themself was cut off with a yelp as the cloth of the tent was ripped open, being met face to face with none other than their partner, Clementine.

Their silver eyes widened at the sight of Cole standing before their tent.

"Oh, I didn't realize you were there." They giggled, leaning forward to gently kiss Cole. "Did you need something, love?"

"Uhm.." Their grip on the item in their hand tightened.

"I just.. wanted to see if you were busy?"

Despite their questioning look, they didn't press further about the anxiousness radiating off of Cole.

The blonde would tell them when they were ready, Clementine had assumed.

"I'm sorry, Perrine asked for my help with something today."

That deflated Cole's already paper thin ideal of confidence. Though Clementine, ever the loving partner, immediately sensed the shift in their mood.

"I'll make it up to you, yeah?"

They gave another chaste kiss, before moving past Cole with a wave and a grin.

Despite their heart fluttering at the kiss, it did little to soothe the wave of dejection that washed over Cole.

They held up their hand, looking at the silver ring in their palm in defeat.

"Whatcha got there?"

Cole let out a noise of surprise as they flinched, hand instinctively closing to hide the ring. Their mask, which had been resting on their head, had fallen down over their face when they startled.

"K-Kingsley!"

They huffed, pulling their mask back over their head to look at the shorter brunette. The Lark in question only gave a smug grin.

"You're proposing to C-"

Cole immediately slapped a hand over their mouth, shushing them harshly.

"You're going to ruin it if you yell it out for all of the hayfields to hear."

"Sorry."

They sheepishly grinned once Cole moved their hand away.

But when the blonde noticed the mischievous glint in their eyes, they knew that Kingsley had gotten another one of his bright ideas.

"...You're not helping me, Kingsley. I need to do this myself, that way it's genuine."

"Well it seems it's not getting you very far by doing it on your own."

The brunette tapped their chin for a moment before grinning once again. Cole already knew what they were going to say before the words even came out.

"Ten crickets and I'll help you out."

"I-I don't have any crickets.."

"Then sorry babygirl, business is business, you're on your own."

"Kingsley!"

They called hurriedly as Kingsley began turning to leave. Cole didn't want to have to ask for help, but it seemed doing it on their own wasn't going to get them very far.

"Fine, fine. But you owe me one."

Before Cole could get even a syllable out as a protest, Kingsley had taken their wrist and began dragging them off as they started rambling off ideas.

By the time the duo had come up with a solid plan, the sun was sinking below the horizon.

Kingsley had left Cole alone in the hayfields with the promise of sending Clementine, leaving the blonde to their thoughts.

Cole paced rather nervously, repeating the words of encouragement Kingsley had offered under their breath.

They didn't stop their pacing and muttering until the soft sound of footsteps approached.

"Cole? Kingsley said you'd be here."

They nodded silently, eyes trained on the ground as they scuffed the dirt with their shoe slightly.

Now was the perfect chance. The two were alone, in the very place where Clementine had first told Cole they loved them.

The silence between them must've gone on too long, as Clementine began to twirl one of their curls as they quietly asked.

"Is something wrong?"

Cole took a quiet breath, of which eased some of their overwhelming nerves.

"Clemmie, I've never been too great with my words, except for writing lyrics."

At Clementine's soft laughter, Cole became emboldened and continued on.

"But to be able to spend eternity with you, like the Bellringer and the Storyteller, would make me the happiest."

They gently took Clementine's hand, slipping the silver jewelry onto their finger. The blonde let a soft gasp.

"I'd love to spend eternity with you."

Clementine murmured, barely able to contain their grin.

Warm hands cupped Cole's face, before a kiss was placed upon their lips.

Then another, again and again until Cole stumbled back to escape the overwhelming affection as they both tumbled into the tall grass.

Cole and Clementine laid there, giggling to each other. But the curly haired blonde had their hand up to admire their ring.

"How much did this even cost you?"

".. I'd prefer not to say."

Clementine huffed, but their expression was fond.

"No matter, I'll have eternity to make it up to you."
