Mrs. Simmons paused at the kitchen doorway, leaning against the frame as she watched her daughter on a FaceTime call. A warm smile spread across her face as she listened to Sophia's infectious laughter, her eyes sparkling with joy.

"...and then she tripped over the tree root and ended up covered in mud!" Sophia exclaimed, giggling uncontrollably. "I wish you could have been there to see it."

Sophia's father, Mr. Simmons, chuckled on the other end of the call. "Hey, at least I made you laugh, kiddo. That's what matters most." His face lit up with a fond smile as he gazed at his daughter.

Mrs. Simmons stepped further into the kitchen, walking over to where Sophia sat at the kitchen table. She gently placed a hand on Sophia's shoulder, causing her to look up.

"Hey, sweetie," Mrs. Simmons said softly, leaning down to place a tender kiss on Sophia's forehead. "Sounds like you're having a good chat with your dad."

Sophia nodded, a warm smile spreading across her face. "Yeah, he's been telling me all the cool sights he's seen on his trip. It's making me wish I could have been there with him."

Mrs. Simmons glanced at the screen, catching her husband's eye. "Hey handsome," Mrs Simmons says, a small side smile dancing on her lips. They exchange knowing stares only for Sophia to loudly clear her throat making them snap there gazes away.

Sophia groaned playfully. "Don't you two go getting all lovey-dovey on me now. You can save that for your own FaceTime session later."

Her parents both laughed, Mr. Simmons shaking his head in amusement. "Don't worry, kiddo. We'll keep the mushy stuff to a minimum."

"That's all I ask," Sophia replied with a grin, turning her attention back to the screen.

"Well, I'm sure you two have plenty more to catch up on," Mrs. Simmons said, straightening up. "I'll just get breakfast started, okay?"

Mrs. Simmons chuckled and made her way around the kitchen island, opening the fridge and gathering the ingredients for a hearty breakfast. As she worked, she couldn't help but glance over at Sophia every so often, marveling at the way her daughter's face lit up with joy as she conversed with her father.

It was a stark contrast to the weary, troubled expression Sophia had worn just the day before. Mrs. Simmons knew the road ahead was going to be challenging, but they are moments like these, where Sophia could forget her illness and simply revel in the love of her family, gave her hope.

As Sophia's laughter filled the kitchen once more, Mrs. Simmons felt a surge of gratitude wash over her. She was thankful for the precious time they had together, and she vowed to do everything in her power to ensure Sophia had many more moments like this.

Sophia's voice suddenly softened, a wistful tone creeping in. "Dad?"

"Yes, kiddo?" her father replied, his own voice gentle.
