The next morning unfolded with the usual routine. I got up early, prepared breakfast, and drove Malik and Nia to school. As I approached Valley Prep Academy, I spotted Zoey waiting near the entrance, her eyes fixed on her phone. My anxiety spiked—why was she outside and not in class?
As soon as I got out of the car, Zoey rushed over, pressing her lips to mine briefly before grasping my hand. I tried to pull away, but her grip was firm, pinching me lightly to keep my hand in hers. The pressure was overwhelming, but I didn’t want to make a scene.
Throughout the day, Zoey clung to me, her hand never releasing mine. Her possessiveness was stifling, but I kept my discomfort to myself. During lunch, I joined the friends I’d made since starting at Valley Prep, trying to act as if everything was normal. They were curious about the shift in my relationship with Zoey.
Gemma, one of my friends, was the first to address it. “So, what’s up with you and Zoey? You two were practically enemies last week, and now you’re all buddy-buddy.”
I forced a smile, attempting to downplay it. “Yeah, it’s complicated. She’s a bit too controlling for my liking.”
Gemma’s eyes lit up with a sudden idea. “Really? Because I’ve been thinking… why not give me a chance?”
Without hesitation, Gemma approached Zoey, who was sitting nearby. “Zoey, want to go out with me sometime?” she asked boldly.
Zoey’s face darkened as she rejected Gemma’s advance. Without warning, Gemma, in a fit of sudden aggression, swung her fist and hit me squarely in the mouth. The pain was immediate and intense, and I staggered backward, blood spilling from my lip. Gasps of shock rippled through the cafeteria.
As I tried to recover, Zoey’s fury was unleashed. She leaped from her seat, her eyes blazing with anger. In a flash, she retaliated against Gemma, landing a harsh punch to her stomach. The cafeteria erupted into chaos as Zoey and Gemma’s fight escalated, their blows landing with increasing intensity.
Teachers rushed in, struggling to separate the two. I sat dazed and bleeding, my heart racing as the violence unfolded around me. Security intervened quickly, escorting both Zoey and Gemma away.
The room fell into an uneasy silence, and I was left shaken by the violence that had erupted. The lines between affection, possession, and aggression had blurred dramatically, and I realized with a sinking feeling that this wasn’t what I wanted. I needed to find a way to address the situation before things got any worse.
