Inspired by the song: ship in a bottle by Fin
I gasped as my eyes snapped open in a panic. I thrashed around as the chains bound me to a metal pipe that was a few inches above me. Sweat dripped from my forehead as I frantically looked around to view my surroundings just to be met with a dark room. The only light illuminating the room was the gaps in the floorboards from above. My shirt was in tatters, my hair damp and most likely smelling of salt water.
I breathed heavily, my chest heaving from the adrenaline that hadn’t quite yet left my body. As I relaxed, I heard footsteps approaching the trapped door as it swung open with great force, making me flinch at the noise. Soon, a pair of black boots trotted down the wooden steps revealing a boy..or man? I supposed, no later than the early twenties. He had loose curly ginger hair that bounced with every step he took, light skin that looked soft to the touch, and freckles littering his body. Although, due to the room's lack of light, I couldn’t quite see his eyes. Well, that and the enormous hat he wore on top of his head.
I snapped out of my thoughts as he spoke, “So, not often we find a dead fish floatin’ along the coast. What were ye doin’ out there?” He spoke as he eyed me, almost as if he were observing my every move.
“I-..I can’t remember,” my words barely above a whisper as he leaned closer to my face. Quickly, I averted my eyes, tilting my head upward, like a child when being told they have to eat their vegetables.
“Ah I see, makes sense considerin’ we found ya in pretty rough condition. We thought we found a dead man, haha!” The man chuckled as he placed his hand under his chin and backed away.
“Is there anythin’ ye do remember?”
I thought to myself for a moment before speaking up.
“Just my body plunging into the endless sea” the man hummed in response
“Guess it was good we found ya ‘fore the sharks did, eh? Well then, may I get a name for the ‘not dead’ dead man?” He quirked his brow.
“Tobias, Tobias Rodgers…But I’d prefer it if you were to just call me Toby.”
“Well Tobias, name’s Adam, Adam is the only thin’ ya need to know. Ye see I’m the Captain of this here crew. And as long as you don’t try to pull a fast one, your head may remain attached to ye body.” My brows furrowed slightly.
“Aren’t you a little young to be a Captain? I mean, you look no older than me” He gave an airy chuckle as he took off his hat, the light hitting just right to let me get a glimpse of his glistening amber eyes.
“That’s none of yer concern, pretty boy. Now, we can do this the easy way or the hard way. You either join my crew and live, or ye can sleep with the sharks when we toss ye overboard.” My lungs felt like they were caught in my throat as I quickly agreed to join, much better than being shark food.
“Already then! Let's get ye unbound from this here pipe” He pulled out a key and locked the chains. I stood up, quickly regretting that decision as I got whiplash. That on top of being seasick, due to how much sea water I took in while in the water, caused me to spill my guts into some old barrel.
“Yikes..ye better be careful, especially since ya aren’t quite in fit condition-” He walked over to me before helping me stand straight and guiding me to the steps.
“For the record..do take into consideration that there are 10 of us and one of you..so if you get any ideas jus’ know..it will get messy.”
