INAYA P.O.V
Hey. I am Inaya Malhotra.
I am 20 years old. As an Indian girl, it's probably no surprise what I'm doing with my life. Well, like any typical Indian family's daughter, I am studying to become a doctor. No one is surprised. It's not like I don't want to be one. I do. But the problem arises when your parents start pressuring you. I haven't gone on holiday or vacation in the last two years, and I honestly hate my life right now.
On the other hand, we have my younger sister Anya.
She is totally different from me. When I try not to cause arguments with Mom, she shows her true rebellious behavior. And honestly, she knows what she wants to do. Mom often treats her badly because, unlike a "good" daughter, she does what she wants to. She wants to be a fashion designer, but for Mom, that's just a waste of time. However, I have always supported her. I want to be a good sister.
I was deep into my textbooks, trying to make sense of biochemical pathways, when Mom's voice thundered through the house, once again directed at Anya. I sighed, marking my place with a finger before stepping out of my room.
"What's wrong now?" I asked, trying to keep the irritation out of my voice as I approached the living room.
Mom turned to me, her eyes flashing with frustration. "The entrance exam is near, and Anya has planned to go out with her friends. Anya, how can you be so useless? Why can't you be like your sister and just study and become a doctor?!?! What's even the use of fashion designing?!?"
I couldn't take it anymore. "Mom! Stop!!"
She looked at me, stunned into silence for a moment.
"Mom, not everyone wants to become a doctor, alright? People have different dreams."
"But what is she even going to do with fashion designing? Design clothes?" she retorted.
"Yes. You remember the gown you once wore that you loved? It was made by a fashion designer. Imagine your own daughter designing a gown just for you."
