The pretty nurse came back after Romeo and I chatted for a while. She brought a cheerful doctor with her too. He spoke English and he made me laugh...until he told me he would come back in an hour to take me into surgery that is.
He explained he'll give me a magic gas to help me fall asleep and stay asleep for a while so that I won't feel a thing, but that didn't make me any less nervous. I trust Romeo and Romeo said he won't let anything bad happen to me while I can't help myself but I'm still new to trusting people and it's hard.
It's scary to think they're going to be doing things to my body and I'll have no idea what. And then of course there's the element of the pain that will come after and the long recovery Doctor Fenton promised me would be worth it in the end. I should be used to pain after years of it but I suppose I was just beginning to hope that being saved had put an end to it.
"I won't leave your side. And I won't let them do anything that's going to harm you."
My eyes go wide from the shock of having my big brother read my mind yet again. I pause chewing away at my lip and consider his promise.
"What if they make you leave?"
"They can't. I have this...and I'm your big brother." He assures me, showing off his bronze police badge that was tucked inside his pocket.
"What if I feel it and it hurts me?" I continue my interrogation.
"When I was your age I broke my leg falling off my bike and I had to have surgery. You won't even realise you're asleep before it's all done baby." He threads his fingers through mine and squeezes gently. I don't think he's realised yet but I don't plan on ever letting go. I'm actually worrying about needing to use the bathroom on my own and having to let him out of my sight. I've known Romeo barely a few hours and I'm fully attached to him like those baby ducklings are to their mother.
"Did you tell Ryle I have to go in for surgery yet?"
"Yep." Romeo nods taking his phone from his pocket again and reading what I assume is Ryle's response to his text.
"Ryle says...never mind I can't repeat this language to my baby sister but he said to tell you you'll be just fine and that he loves you."
My heart flutters knowing that I have the love of a man I don't even know yet. It's so surreal to have all of my life long wishes coming true at once, I kind of want to cry happy tears. Instead, I blink hard and focus on the other half of what Rome said.
"What did he say? Was he being nasty?" My brows furrow as I worry that Ryle may not be as kind as Romeo. I suppose there has to be some catch to all of this.
"Nothing to stress your little head about." He taps my nose with a finger making me smile. "Let's just say he was...threatening to kick my butt if I let you out of my sight." His easy smirk shows me that he's used to such sort of banter between himself and Ryle which reassures me a lot. I let go of tension I didn't realise I was holding and lay back again.
"If you thought I was protecive over you..." Romeo trails off with a laugh shaking his head. I can't imagine how Ryle could be any more protective but it makes me feel giddy. I'd be the luckiest girl in the world to have not one but two brothers showing me this much support and love. I can't begin to believe my luck.
"Just you wait until you meet your other brothers."
I bolt upright in my bed, so fast that I pull a few injured muscles and lean on some of my sores. Even so, all I care about is that one extra letter on the end of 'brother'.
