The cool night air bit at Adira's cheeks as she strode down the street, lost in her own thoughts. Her heels clicked against the pavement, a metronome to the steady beat of her heart.
But there was something amiss.
A ripple in the air.
A shift in the shadows.
She felt it before she saw it - the figure that trailed her, close and yet intangible.
Like a phantom. A predator.
Adira's pace quickened, adrenaline coursing through her veins. And then, in the blink of an eye, it happened. She felt the vice grip of a hand on her shoulder, spinning her around. There he stood, dark-haired and brooding.
"Don't move," he growled, his voice a low rumble.
Adira froze, her eyes darting around in a futile search for escape. But he was swift, closing the distance between them with lightning speed.
"I'm not going to hurt you," he said, "I'm here to protect you."
She shook her head, her heart thudding in her chest. "Who are you?"
"Liam." He flashed a badge.
Adira scrutinized the badge, her mind racing. This was too much, too sudden.
"How can I trust you?" she demanded. "How can I be sure you're not the one who's after me?"
Liam's eyes narrowed. "Look around, Adira. Do you see anyone else here?"
She glanced over her shoulder, and sure enough, the street was empty. Still, something about Liam sent a shiver down her spine. He was danger, wrapped in mystery, and for a moment, she considered running.
"What choice do I have?" she whispered.Liam led her back to her building, his hand never leaving the small of her back. Adira cast a sidelong glance at him, unsure if she should feel reassured or threatened. When they reached her door, Liam turned to face her.
"I'll be staying here tonight," he said, his gaze piercing. "There's no way of knowing if they'll try again."
Adira tensed. The thought of him, in her apartment, made her pulse quicken for reasons she couldn't explain.
"I don't know you," she protested weakly.Liam's eyes softened, just a fraction.
"I know this is hard to believe, but I'm not here to hurt you. In fact, I'd lay down my life to protect you."
His words struck a chord in Adira, despite her better judgement.
"Why?" she asked, her voice barely a whisper.
Liam hesitated, his fingers drumming against his thigh. "It's...complicated," he finally said. "But I promise, I'm not your enemy."
Adira nodded slowly, her mind whirling with possibilities. She opened the door and let Liam in, the sound of the lock clicking into place filling the silence.
He took in the apartment with a practiced eye, cataloging exits and hiding places.
Adira watched him, her heart hammering in her chest. He was still a stranger, but there was something about him, something that made her feel...safe.
"It's time for you to tell me what's going on," she said.
Liam sighed, running a hand through his hair.
"Adira, you're in danger."
