Zeya's pov
The hall is completely filled with people, none of them I know. I was not only surprised, but I could still feel my heart trying to jump out of my mouth. It feels suffocating being here, with all these people, and the idea of being perceived by them is already giving me anxiety. My hands are sweaty, and my heart is thumping in my ears.
I need to get a hold of myself.
Putting two plus two is easy enough after what I have seen. The person who has unfortunately (also mistakenly) taken my handkerchief was Ezra Stryer. Even though he has changed, his attitude didn't tone down. He has remained the arrogant person that he used to be.
As Eva and I used to go to school together, sometimes he would come to pick her up. He always looked like he was pissed. Never spoke to me unless it was necessary and didn't like it when I was around.
After I got to the table where both our parents were talking their hearts out, I was suddenly tackled by someone.
"Goshhh Zeya, I didn't even recognize you. You look so pretty in this dress. You're like a cute princess. I haven't seen you for so long."
I was crushed into a tight hug. I could almost hear my rib cage snapping. This is Evara, and there was no single doubt about it. She has grown up to become much more beautiful. Even when she was a kid, she was pretty like a rose. And now she is ethereal.
I try to hug her back, but I can feel my stiffness. " I've missed you as well, Eva." When she finally leaves me from the hug, I can see my mom smiling the biggest smile I have ever seen.
It felt like, after ages, I had hugged someone this tightly. I had forgotten what human warmth really is.
Before I can say anything, Evara is dragging me towards the bar.
"We are off to catch up after ten years. So it will take a few hours to get done." She speaks over the humming noise of the others.
She keeps talking, "From what I can see, you're still the same way you were. The quiet kid I had played with back in kindergarten. So how's high school going, even though it's our last year."
" Well..." I drag on. I haven't talked to her for years, so it's taking me time to adjust to this sudden occasion of speaking about myself.
"I'm just going by. You see, nothing special as such."
Eva looks at me with her big doe eyes. Unlike her brother, she has grey eyes with a hint of blue, and those eyes are mesmerizing. She's waiting for me to finish, as I keep fiddling with the hem of my dress.
" Ze, there's no need to hurry, you know. I get it. We haven't talked in a while, and you feel out of place. So why don't we start by introducing ourselves? Hey, I'm Evarah. But you can call me Eva."
I can't help it, as I break into a big smile. She always knows how to win me over. "It's nice to meet you, Eva. I'm Zeya, but you can call me Ze." We both break into fits of giggles with this.
Eva orders a drink and asks me what I'd like, but I'd rather not have anything at all. I can't even handle a bit of red wine. She was sent to Scotland, back to her aunt's. There, she completed middle school and then came back here for high school.
My eyes keep wandering unknowingly, and before I know it, I've found the specific person I am looking for.
He has a woman with him. She's pressing onto him, clutching onto his arm. And he is laughing at something she is saying in his ear. Both of them look good together. What the hell am I even thinking? He can be with anyone and no one. Why am I so curious about him suddenly? Not before today, I didn't even know him.
